Do I not know what comes next?
→ use the progression guide
Do I know the system that is failing?
→ go straight to that focused guide
Is the system working but still too slow?
→ scale the first stage that cannot keep up
Is material already piling up somewhere?
→ fix that bottleneck before adding more input
Is the section working and only looks messy?
→ I usually leave it alone until the layout is actually causing a problem
Sandustry gives me more things to build than I can reasonably improve at once.
That is why I do not use the Tech Tree as my to-do list.
I use the factory itself.
The question that keeps me moving is:
What is the first thing preventing the next useful result?
Sometimes the answer is progression.
Sometimes it is Water.
Sometimes it is a blocked machine, a missing resource, or a production stage that simply cannot keep up.
And sometimes nothing is actually broken — I just see a messy factory and feel like rebuilding it.
Those situations need different responses.
I do not start with the newest machine I unlocked.
I start with the current goal and work backward.
If I need a result from a production chain, I ask:
What final output am I waiting for?
→ Is the machine that makes it receiving input?
→ Is that input in the correct state?
→ Can the output leave?
The first answer that becomes no usually tells me where to work.
That gives me a much cleaner build order than buying everything that looks useful.
If the current stage already has everything it needs and the output is moving, I do not automatically add another copy.
I wait until the factory shows me why another one is necessary.
I use accumulation as my fastest clue.
Material is piling up before a machine
→ that machine or processing stage may be too slow.
Material is piling up after a machine
→ transport or the next consumer may be too slow.
Nothing is piling up anywhere
→ I may actually need more upstream supply.
The full path is moving and the objective is advancing
→ I usually wait.
This distinction matters because adding input to a blocked system usually makes the factory look busier without making it more productive.
That one rule applies to most of my factory decisions, even though the actual fix belongs in the guide for that system.
I do not rebuild something because it looks temporary.
A section earns a rebuild when the layout itself starts creating a real cost.
I consider rebuilding when:
I usually do not rebuild when:
A good rebuild solves a specific limitation.
It is not just a cleaner screenshot.
I do not have one universal layout that I use for every system.
What I want is a layout that makes failure obvious.
For me, a useful section has:
a clear input
→ a visible processing area
→ somewhere for temporary accumulation
→ a clear output
→ room to extend the slow stage later
I also try to avoid making every raw material pass through one giant central route when the consumer is already nearby.
Shorter local routes are easier for me to inspect.
The important thing is not symmetry.
It is being able to answer:
Where would material wait if this stage became the bottleneck?
If I cannot answer that because several systems are mixed together, the layout may be creating more troubleshooting work than it saves.
For now, I use these layout principles across the factory instead of treating every production stage as if it needs one universal design.
I do not turn an experiment into a reusable module.
I wait until I have seen the full path work.
That means:
input arrives
→ processing completes
→ output leaves
→ the section survives normal factory load
Only then do I care about saving or repeating it.
For the actual selection, import, export, and reuse workflow, I use the Blueprints guide.
My rule here is only about timing:
I save the solution after it proves itself, not while I am still discovering the problem.
That keeps me from copying the same mistake into several places.
When I am not sure whether I should build, explore, save Gold, or open the Tech Tree, I use the Sandustry progression guide.
That is where I reset the route and identify the active gate.
Once I know the current system, I leave the broad route and move into the focused guide.
When Sand, Residue, Seeds, or Gold keep backing up around the first production line, I use the early factory automation guide.
I stop rebuilding the starter section once it can supply the next stage without constant rescue.
When the problem is Water collection, Pumps, Pipes, Liquid Vents, storage, or a destination that stays dry, I use the Pipes, Pumps, and Water guide.
If Water is already available but not reaching the consumer, I treat that as a transport problem before I go looking for another source.
When Seeds are available but Wet Seeds, Planter Boxes, mature Flowers, or output routing are slowing the next step, I use the flower farming and automation guide.
If prepared input is already waiting, I inspect the downstream stage before increasing Seed production.
When the flower side is working and Amethelis is backing up, I move to the Florin and Florinol guide.
Once Florinol is stable, I leave that chemistry alone unless a later system is genuinely starving.
When the factory looks ready but Tier 5 remains unavailable, I use the Tier 5 unlock guide.
I verify the actual progression gates instead of expanding unrelated production and hoping the tier changes.
When progression has moved into the electrical stage, I use the batteries and Steam Turbines guide.
That is where I decide whether the real problem is storage, generation, connection, Steam flow, or Water recycling.
Once the Energy requirement is complete, I stop scaling power just for progression.
When I need Void Petals, Void Bloom, Fluxite, Void Juice, Void Husk recycling, or a working Voidgrazer loop, I use the Void Husk and Void Juice guide.
I keep that material chain together instead of treating each Void resource as a separate factory problem.
When the Strataform event becomes the active blocker, I use the Stratacore and Strataform guide.
I clear the live-core gate first.
I decide what to do with renewable Sand afterward.
When I have moved past the Tier 5 Energy stage but I am not sure whether I should be dealing with Stratacore, Aura, or the Tech Tree, I use the Tier 6–7 progression guide.
That is the route I follow when the problem is no longer one machine or one material, but the order of the remaining progression gates.
When I have the Corraller, find a new species, need more Conservatory progress, or want to know whether another duplicate is worth the trip, I use the Critters and Corraller guide.
I prioritize missing species for collection progress and duplicates only when their output solves a current resource shortage.
When an underground room looks intentional but I cannot see the solution, I use the Artifact puzzle guide.
I finish rooms that match tools I already have and leave obvious tool-gated rooms until I am better equipped.
When the problem has moved to Aurixite, Auralite, the Aura Extractor, crystal growth, Nanobots, or Aura saturation, I use the Aura Extraction guide.
Once the Aura threshold is complete, I stop treating Aura throughput as the current progression problem.
When the main progression route is no longer the question and I want to see what completion goals remain, I use the Sandustry achievements guide.
I let normal progression earn the easy milestones and save the expensive Gold, collection, research, and late-system cleanup for a factory that can already afford it.
The factory can always be larger.
It can always be cleaner.
It can always use another machine.
That does not mean the next useful move is expansion.
I only change a working section when I can name the problem I expect the change to solve.
If I cannot name that problem, I leave the section running and put my time into the system that is actually holding the save back.
That gives me a simple loop:
find the blocker
→ go to the focused guide when one exists
→ use the broader setup rules here when the problem is still general
→ move on once the factory gives me the result I needed.
