Cost of Hope Guides

Quick Answer

Cost of Hope is a branching story expansion integrated into the main STALKER 2 campaign.

I think about the campaign in five stages:

start setup

Iron Forest

wider-Zone investigations

X16 and the Duty/Freedom split

Montreal, CNPP, Reactor 4 and X19

If I have not started yet, I use the How to Start Cost of Hope guide.

If I mainly need to know which mission comes next, I use the complete Cost of Hope walkthrough.

If I am already at the permanent Mavka or Zulu decision, I use the Duty or Freedom guide before choosing.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Cost of Hope DLC Content menu
Cost of Hope runs alongside the main Heart of Chornobyl campaign, while the DLC Content options give me faster ways to reach it on a new run.

Cost of Hope is much larger than the first Iron Forest missions make it look.

The opening gives me a new region and a relatively contained investigation, but the campaign eventually returns to the wider Zone, splits into two parallel investigations, converges inside Laboratory X16 and then branches permanently between Duty and Freedom.

That structure matters more than trying to memorize every individual mission before I start.

How Cost of Hope Is Structured

I use the current campaign stage to decide which route I need.

Start Setup

Cost of Hope can be entered through an existing campaign or through the DLC Content options.

For me, the practical choice is:

  • existing save when I want to keep my character, gear and world state;
  • Early Start when I want Cost of Hope woven into a broader new campaign;
  • Advanced Start when the DLC itself is my priority.

There is also an important gap between the first and second DLC story blocks on some saves.

The exact requirements and which start I use are in the How to Start Cost of Hope guide.

Iron Forest

The first major stage begins around the Slag Heap and expands into the Iron Forest.

Exploring the Iron Forest in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Cost of Hope
The Iron Forest is the first large Cost of Hope stage, but it is only the opening block of the full campaign.

If I am dealing with:

  • Chatterbox;
  • the Iron Forest perimeter;
  • the IPSF checkpoint;
  • Kurin;
  • repeaters;
  • the Power Substation;
  • Testing Workshop;
  • Distant Mirage;

I stay with the Iron Forest Guide.

That guide handles the route itself.

Here, the important checkpoint is that Distant Mirage closes the first major Cost of Hope story block.

Wider-Zone Investigations

The second half begins with Moving in the Shadows and shifts the campaign away from the Iron Forest.

After that transition, two investigations develop in parallel.

If I am following Tachenko, Lymansk, the Bubble, Svarog or the hospital, I use the Shadows of the Past Walkthrough.

If I am following Lukash, Krug Antenna Complex, IPSF, Perimeter Dam or Czechov, I use the To the Origins of Freedom Walkthrough.

I finish both investigations before expecting the campaign to converge on X16.

Laboratory X16

The Destructive Power of the Mind brings Mavka and Zulu together for the Laboratory X16 operation.

Cost of Hope gives me two Mavka/Zulu decisions around this stage.

Only the second one permanently determines the rest of the campaign.

The first changes the way I enter X16.

The later confrontation inside the laboratory determines:

Mavka → Freedom

Zulu → Duty

Mavka and Zulu during the permanent Duty or Freedom choice in Laboratory X16
I protect a manual save at the later X16 confrontation. This is the decision that permanently separates the Freedom and Duty routes.

For the laboratory route itself, I use the X16 Walkthrough.

For the actual choice, rewards and ending consequences, I use the Duty or Freedom Guide.

Montreal, CNPP and X19

After X16, Duty and Freedom no longer receive the same sequence of mission names.

Both routes eventually move toward:

Montreal → CNPP → Reactor 4 → X19

Arriving at the CNPP during S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Cost of Hope
The CNPP begins the final major stage. Duty and Freedom approach it differently before both routes move toward Reactor 4 and X19.

If my PDA shows late missions such as Status Quo, Dangerous Way, In the Memory of the Fallen, Gunpowder, Sweat, and Blood, Uninvited Guests or The Price of a Miracle, I use the CNPP and X19 Walkthrough.

I do not wait for missions belonging to the opposite faction to appear.

The Three Progression Checks I Use Most

Most of the times Cost of Hope appears to stop, I am at one of three structural gates rather than dealing with a broken quest.

Nothing Starts After Distant Mirage

On a normal campaign or Early Start, I check whether the base story has reached:

A Minor Incident

If not, I continue Heart of Chornobyl.

The later Cost of Hope block does not fully open until that point.

X16 Does Not Start After One Investigation

I check the PDA for the other investigation.

Shadows of the Past and To the Origins of Freedom are not competing faction routes.

I finish both.

A Late Mission Never Appears

After the final X16 decision, I only receive missions for the faction I chose.

Supporting Mavka puts the campaign on the Freedom route.

Supporting Zulu puts it on the Duty route.

For the exact mission names and order, I use the Cost of Hope Walkthrough.

How Many Main Missions Are in Cost of Hope?

Across both branches there are:

16 different named main missions

but I do not play all 16 on one normal save.

A Duty route contains 13 main missions.

A Freedom route contains 14 main missions.

The difference comes from faction-exclusive missions after the X16 split.

I do not use the Hub as a sixteen-step checklist because that would make the branching structure harder to read.

The full mission-order walkthrough shows which missions are shared, which belong to Duty and which belong to Freedom.

Duty or Freedom: Which Side Should I Choose?

I do not treat the choice as a simple good-ending versus bad-ending decision.

Mavka believes the technology should be preserved and understood because its effects may eventually produce something useful.

Zulu sees its destructive history as evidence that it should be contained and destroyed before another attempt to control the Zone causes an even larger disaster.

The choice also changes:

  • faction allies;
  • late-game missions;
  • several unique weapons;
  • the final story outcome.

If weapons are my main consideration, Mavka / Freedom gives me more faction-exclusive uniques.

If story is the priority, I choose based on whether I think preservation or containment is the more acceptable risk.

The full comparison is in the Mavka or Zulu / Duty or Freedom Guide.

Make One Important Save at X16

If I expect to see both major routes, I make one protected manual save before the permanent X16 decision.

I do not overwrite it.

That save lets me finish one faction route, reload, choose the other side and skip replaying the shared Iron Forest and investigation stages.

It also gives me access to the alternative faction weapon rewards.

For me, this is much more useful than keeping dozens of random saves throughout the expansion.

Cost of Hope Has 12 Unique Weapons

There are 12 named Cost of Hope unique weapons, but faction choices mean I cannot keep every one of them on a single normal route.

Some are ordinary world or quest pickups.

Others are rewards tied to Mavka/Freedom or Zulu/Duty.

That distinction matters because a missing weapon is not always a location I failed to search.

It may simply belong to the other branch.

The All 12 Unique Weapon Locations Guide includes the complete collection, missable pickups, faction restrictions and my Cost of Hope weapon tier list.

If I mainly care about combat value rather than completion, that is also where I compare which uniques are actually worth building a loadout around.

How Long Is Cost of Hope?

For a first playthrough with normal exploration and some side content, I plan around:

15–20 hours

rather than treating Cost of Hope as a short six-hour expansion.

If I reload the X16 decision, play the other faction route and spend more time on optional content, my total can reach:

around 30 hours or more

That is why I treat the Duty/Freedom split as a substantial second branch rather than an alternate final cutscene.

I Do Not Save Every Side Quest for the End

Cost of Hope contains enough optional content that I can easily spend a large amount of time clearing the map.

I do not make that mandatory before continuing the story.

At the same time, I do not deliberately leave every named side quest until after X19.

My rule is simple:

If a side quest matters to me and its NPCs are already on my current route, I finish it before another major faction transition.

Ordinary POIs, stashes and exploration can wait.

Named quests involving characters whose situation may change with the faction war deserve more caution.

Cost of Hope Weapons and Update 2.0 Weapons Are Different

Cost of Hope arrived alongside a much broader game update, which makes the new weapon pool easy to misunderstand.

Update 2.0 added standard weapon platforms such as:

  • Arev
  • GP3A
  • SKP
  • Fora

Those belong to the wider game.

They are not four extra entries in the 12-weapon Cost of Hope unique collection.

Named weapons such as Justice, Maximum, Luftgarde and the faction rewards are the DLC uniques I track separately.

So buying an Arev from a trader does not mean I found one of the 12 Cost of Hope uniques, and missing a Fora does not make the DLC collection incomplete.

Can I Keep Playing After the Cost of Hope Ending?

Yes.

Finishing Cost of Hope does not end the entire save.

I can continue exploring afterward, which means I do not hold back the finale just because ordinary map icons remain unfinished.

What does remain permanent is the faction branch I chose at X16.

If I want the other version of Cost of Hope, I return to the manual save I kept before supporting Mavka or Zulu.

That gives me the alternate missions, faction rewards and ending without replaying the shared campaign.

Cost of Hope FAQ

How long is STALKER 2 Cost of Hope? +

My first route with normal exploration and some side content takes roughly 15–20 hours. Playing the other faction branch from the X16 save and clearing more optional content can push the total to around 30 hours or more.

Can I keep playing after finishing Cost of Hope? +

Yes. I can continue exploring after the Cost of Hope ending. I finish faction- or NPC-sensitive side quests earlier if I care about them because story progression can change who remains available.

Should I finish every Cost of Hope side quest before the ending? +

I do not clear every POI before the finale, but I finish named side quests I care about while their NPCs and region are still part of my current route. Some optional content can become less accessible after major faction changes.

Are the Update 2.0 weapons part of the 12 Cost of Hope unique weapons? +

No. Update 2.0 added normal weapon platforms such as Arev, GP3A, SKP and Fora to the wider game. The 12 Cost of Hope uniques are named weapons tied to DLC quests, world pickups and faction rewards.
