How to Start Cost of Hope in STALKER 2

Start Cost of Hope from an existing save or the DLC Content menu, choose Early or Advanced Start, then reach the Slag Heap and find Chatterbox.

How to Start Cost of Hope in STALKER 2

Quick Answer

There are three ways I start Cost of Hope in STALKER 2.

If I already have a campaign, I can continue that save. Part 1 becomes available shortly after leaving the Lesser Zone, while Part 2 requires the main-story mission A Minor Incident.

If I mainly want to play the DLC, I use:

New Game → DLC Content → Skip Ahead to The Cost of Hope → Advanced Start

That puts me far enough into the campaign for both major parts of Cost of Hope to be available.

Early Start is better when I still want to play the base campaign around the DLC, because Part 2 remains locked until I reach A Minor Incident.

Once the DLC mission is active, I head to the Slag Heap, find Chatterbox, and follow his lead toward the Iron Forest.

Cost of Hope DLC Content option in the STALKER 2 New Game menu
For a dedicated Cost of Hope run, I use the DLC Content option instead of replaying the opening hours of Heart of Chornobyl.

Cost of Hope is integrated into the main Heart of Chornobyl campaign rather than existing as a completely separate standalone story.

That matters because the best way to start depends on how much of my original campaign I want to keep.

I can preserve an existing character, jump into the DLC early while still playing the base story, or skip far enough ahead that both DLC sections are ready.

How to Start Cost of Hope

I use one of three routes:

My situationStart I useWhat happens
I already have a progressed campaignExisting saveCost of Hope appears naturally when that save reaches the required story points
I want the DLC mixed into a new campaignEarly StartPart 1 becomes available early, but I still need to reach A Minor Incident for Part 2
I mainly want to play Cost of HopeAdvanced StartI begin far enough into the campaign to access both major DLC sections

The choice is less about character strength than about how much of Heart of Chornobyl I want to replay.

Cost of Hope runs alongside the original campaign, so Early Start is not the same thing as starting a self-contained DLC campaign from beginning to end.

Starting Cost of Hope From an Existing Save

I do not need to begin a new game if I already have a suitable save.

Using an existing campaign lets me keep:

  • weapons and armor;
  • upgrades;
  • money and stash;
  • discovered locations;
  • base-game faction decisions;
  • the world state I already created.

The first Cost of Hope section becomes available shortly after I leave the Lesser Zone.

The later DLC section has a more important checkpoint:

A Minor Incident

If my save has already completed that main-story mission, I do not replay the campaign simply to make Part 2 available.

I load the progressed save and check the PDA for the Cost of Hope mission.

When I Prefer a Fresh DLC Start

A heavily developed endgame save can make the early DLC encounters much easier than they would otherwise be.

If my character already has high-end armor, fully upgraded weapons, a large ammunition reserve and enough money to ignore repairs, the opening Iron Forest section loses some of its resource pressure.

That is not a progression problem.

It is simply a different experience.

I keep the old save when continuity matters most. If I want the DLC economy, loot and upgrades to matter again, I use Advanced Start instead.

Early Start: Play Part 1, Then Continue the Main Story

Early Start is the option I use when I want Cost of Hope woven into a new Heart of Chornobyl playthrough.

Early Start option for STALKER 2 Cost of Hope
Early Start gets me into the first Cost of Hope section without skipping as much of the original campaign.

The important limitation is:

Early Start does not immediately unlock all of Cost of Hope.

I can play the first DLC section, but after that I still need to progress the base campaign until I complete:

A Minor Incident

My route therefore looks like:

Early Start → Cost of Hope Part 1 → main story → A Minor Incident → Cost of Hope Part 2

This is the first thing I check if the DLC appears to stop after the initial Iron Forest section.

I do not wait around the Iron Forest for another call if my main-story save has not yet reached the required mission.

Advanced Start: The Fastest Route to a DLC-Focused Playthrough

If Cost of Hope itself is the reason I am launching the game, I prefer Advanced Start.

Advanced Start choices for STALKER 2 Cost of Hope
Advanced Start skips enough of the original campaign that I can continue through both major Cost of Hope sections without a long base-story gap between them.

I reach it through:

New Game → DLC Content → Skip Ahead to The Cost of Hope → Advanced Start

This places the campaign far enough forward that the later Cost of Hope content is already eligible to trigger.

I also get a functional starting loadout rather than bringing an old endgame stash into the expansion.

That is the balance I prefer for a DLC-focused run.

I use the starting weapons first and only spend coupons after I know what the loadout actually lacks.

Buying a replacement rifle immediately is easy to regret if the Advanced Start kit already covers the same role.

Spark or Ward Does Not Decide Duty or Freedom

Advanced Start asks me to choose between:

  • Advanced Start – Spark
  • Advanced Start – Ward

Those choices represent base-game story state.

They do not choose the later Duty/Freedom branch inside Cost of Hope.

I therefore choose the Heart of Chornobyl state I prefer and continue.

I do not restart an Advanced Start because I picked Spark but later want Duty, or because I picked Ward and later want Freedom.

Those decisions happen at different points in the story.

Where Does Cost of Hope Start?

Once the DLC mission is active, the opening route sends me toward the:

Slag Heap

Cost of Hope does not send me to a separate DLC-only map.

Its missions appear inside the normal Zone and are tracked through the PDA.

The person I need at the Slag Heap is:

Chatterbox

He is the first useful lead on the Iron Forest.

Chatterbox at the Slag Heap discussing the Iron Forest in Cost of Hope
Once Cost of Hope starts, I go to the Slag Heap and finish Chatterbox's conversation before heading toward the Iron Forest perimeter.

I keep talking to him rather than leaving after his first story about the area.

His conversation eventually gives me the information I need to start thinking about how to approach the Iron Forest wall, including the secret meeting point used by Chatterbox and Goodbye and the nearby IPSF checkpoint.

From there, the problem changes from starting the DLC to getting into the Iron Forest.

I continue with the Iron Forest Walkthrough for the actual entry routes and the progression inside the region.

How I Know Cost of Hope Has Started

I confirm the DLC through the PDA.

Cost of Hope objectives are marked as DLC missions.

Cost of Hope DLC mission tag in the STALKER 2 PDA
The DLC tag in the PDA is the confirmation I use that Cost of Hope has activated on the current save.

This is more reliable than trying to infer whether a nearby ordinary quest belongs to the expansion.

If the marked Cost of Hope mission is present, the DLC trigger worked.

I track that objective and follow it toward the Slag Heap.

Do I Need to Finish STALKER 2 Before Starting Cost of Hope?

No.

Cost of Hope is designed to appear during the main campaign.

I do not need to reach the original ending first.

The useful checkpoints are earlier:

  • Part 1 can appear after the early Lesser Zone progression;
  • Part 2 requires A Minor Incident;
  • Advanced Start lets me skip ahead if I do not want to replay the intervening campaign.

This is why an existing mid-game save can be more useful than an old completed save if I want Cost of Hope to feel naturally integrated into my original run.

Why Cost of Hope Part 2 Is Not Starting

If I finish the first DLC section and nothing appears afterward, I check the following causes.

I Used Early Start

This is the most common explanation.

Early Start gives me access to Part 1, but Part 2 still waits for the base-game story to reach:

A Minor Incident

I continue the main campaign.

My Existing Save Is Not Far Enough

An old save is not automatically an eligible save.

The important factor is story position, not total playtime.

I check whether A Minor Incident has actually been completed.

I Chose the Wrong Advanced Start Faction

Spark versus Ward is not the cause.

Those choices do not lock the Cost of Hope Duty/Freedom decision.

I continue the save.

The DLC Mission Is Missing Entirely

I verify that Cost of Hope is installed and enabled, then reload the save and check the PDA.

If I am using older mods, I remove or update them while troubleshooting.

Update 2.0 changed enough underlying systems that I do not leave an outdated mod active while trying to determine whether a DLC quest trigger is working.

The Next DLC Mission Sends Me Somewhere Else

Cost of Hope does not remain entirely inside the Iron Forest.

After the first major section, later objectives move through the wider Zone.

If the PDA tells me to leave the DLC region, I follow the mission rather than waiting inside the forest for another local trigger.

If I am unsure where the DLC should go next, I compare my current objective with the Cost of Hope Walkthrough.

Which Start Should I Choose?

I use an existing save when I want Cost of Hope to continue the character and world state I already built.

I use Early Start when I want to experience the DLC as part of a broader Heart of Chornobyl playthrough.

I use Advanced Start when I mainly want to play Cost of Hope without a long stretch of original-story progression between its major sections.

For a DLC-focused run, my shortest route is:

New Game

DLC Content

Skip Ahead to The Cost of Hope

Advanced Start

check the PDA

go to the Slag Heap

find Chatterbox

follow the Iron Forest lead

For an existing or Early Start campaign, the one later checkpoint I keep in mind is:

A Minor Incident unlocks the later Cost of Hope section.
