How to Get Faith in Graveyard Keeper 2: Sermons & Prayers
Get Faith from sermons, raise Church Power and Town Gratitude, choose the right Prayer, fix low attendance, and decide when Faith is worth spending.
Updated:
Quick Answer
Repair the Church, bring a Prayer, and return on the weekly sermon day.
Before starting, make sure both Town Gratitude and Church Power are high enough for the Prayer you want to use. The Basic Prayer needs 4 parishioners to start, while 8 gives guaranteed success.
Faith becomes scarce almost as soon as the game starts asking you to spend it.
Waypoints want Faith. Later Inspiration upgrades want Faith. Resurrection also uses Faith. The important part is that none of those systems creates a reliable supply on its own.
Your repeatable source is the Church sermon, and sermon output depends on more than simply showing up with a Prayer. Church Power, Town Gratitude, the Prayer’s attendance requirement and the number of people who actually attend all affect how much Faith comes back.
Once I understood that relationship, I stopped pouring materials into the Church without checking whether the town could actually fill the extra seats.
Open the Church Before Trying to Farm Faith
The Church becomes relevant after the Nun enters the story and sends you to prepare the old temple.
At first, clear the damaged interior and build enough of the Church to make the ceremony available. You do not need to finish every possible Church improvement before the first sermon.
If the Nun and Church sequence has not started yet, continue the main walkthrough until that part of the town progression opens.
The first useful target is simply a Church that can hold the ceremony. Extra benches, decorations and later upgrades matter once the attendance cap rises.
Town Gratitude and Church Power Both Limit Attendance
The sermon screen shows two numbers that are easy to misunderstand: Town Gratitude and Church Power.
The number of parishioners who can attend is limited by the lower of those two values.
If you have:
- 20 Church Power;
- but only 10 usable Town Gratitude;
the sermon can only draw 10 parishioners.
The reverse works the same way. A town willing to send 20 people does not help when the Church only has room or power for 10.
This is the number I check before spending another batch of boards, stone or Church supplies.
A larger Church has little immediate value when Town Gratitude is still the smaller number.
The Basic Prayer Needs 4 Parishioners to Start
The first Prayer gives you a clean example of how sermon requirements work.
The Basic Prayer shows:
- 4 parishioners required to start;
- 8 parishioners for guaranteed success.
Having enough to press the sermon button is therefore not the same thing as having enough for a reliable result.
A Church sitting at 4 or 5 possible visitors can technically begin the Basic Prayer, but you are accepting a weaker success chance. Reaching 8 removes that uncertainty.
A Successful Basic Sermon Can Produce 6 Faith With 10 Visitors
A useful early benchmark is a 10-visitor Basic Prayer.
One successful sermon with 10 parishioners produced:
- 3 Faith from the normal sermon reward;
- another 3 Faith from the successful preaching bonus;
- 6 Faith total, along with money.
That result explains why attendance matters so much. Faith income does not improve only because you own a different Prayer; increasing the number of people the Church can actually receive also changes the return.
Later, with the effective attendance increased to 19, another sermon produced 11 Faith total: 5 normal Faith and 6 from the preaching bonus.
The difference is large enough that improving the limiting side of the attendance equation can be more valuable than immediately crafting a more demanding Prayer.
Do Not Overbuild the Church While Town Gratitude Is Still Low
During the early Church sequence, it is easy to keep adding interior upgrades because every extra point looks useful.
There is a natural stopping point.
With a maximum Town Gratitude of 10, pushing Church Power well beyond 10 does not create 15 or 20 visitors. The town side of the equation still caps attendance at 10.
Spend enough materials to reach the attendance you can currently support, then use the remaining wood, stone and crafted parts elsewhere.
Return to Church construction when Town Gratitude has grown enough that Church Power becomes the smaller number.
This avoids one of the more expensive early mistakes: building capacity that cannot yet be used while another active objective is waiting for the same materials.
Raise Town Gratitude by Helping the Town
Town Gratitude comes from helping the settlement rather than decorating the Church itself.
Quests and town orders contribute to it, and the maximum pool also grows as the town gains more people.
A later town-recovery sequence demonstrates the connection directly. Repairing a small house produced a green scroll, which could then be used as part of bringing another resident into town. After the population reached 21, the maximum Town Gratitude also reached 21.
You do not need to rebuild the whole town just to make the next sermon better. The useful moment to return is when your current Church Power is higher than the Town Gratitude cap and attendance can no longer grow from Church improvements alone.
Save Church Materials Until They Raise the Limiting Number
Church upgrades still become important.
The Church progression includes rebuilding and improving the structure, adding benches, producing candles and incense, and eventually writing better Prayers. The Church objectives also point you toward restoring the roof.
But these upgrades compete with the rest of the game for processed wood, stone, metal parts and other supplies.
Before buying or building the next Church improvement, look at the sermon screen.
If Church Power is 8 and Town Gratitude is 15, improving the Church has an immediate payoff.
If Church Power is 15 and Town Gratitude is 8, the next Church upgrade does not increase the current attendance ceiling. Finish town work first and come back afterward.
Better Prayers Need More Parishioners
A stronger Prayer is not automatically better for your current settlement.
The Faith Prayer provides a good comparison with the Basic Prayer. One early version showed:
- 7 parishioners required to start;
- 15 parishioners for guaranteed success.
That is much more demanding than the Basic Prayer’s 4 / 8 thresholds.
The reward shifts in the direction you would expect: the Faith Prayer gives more Faith while keeping the money side similar.
A Bronze Faith Prayer increased the Faith values further, adding 0.1 to both its normal Faith reward and successful Faith reward compared with the lower version being examined.
That does not mean you should replace the Basic Prayer the moment the recipe appears.
A Prayer that needs 15 parishioners for guaranteed success is a poor upgrade while your combined Town Gratitude and Church Power can only provide 8 or 10.
Build the congregation first, then move to the Prayer that the town can support reliably.
Prayer Quality Starts at the Writing Desk
Better Prayers are produced through the writing side of Church progression.
The Writing Desk is used to make Prayers, and the crafting process can produce different Prayer quality. Stories are part of that process, and stronger writing preparation improves the result you can aim for.
This is also where Church progress begins crossing into Mastery and Inspirations. Do not buy unrelated upgrades simply because the Faith icon has started appearing across several progression trees.
For how Inspiration points, perks, Mastery and Research unlocks fit together, use Inspirations, Mastery & Tech Tree.
The Church only needs to provide the Faith. The choice of which Mastery or perk solves your next blocker belongs to that progression system.
Sermons Are Weekly, So Missing the Day Costs Time
Once the introductory ceremony is over, sermons are not available whenever you walk into the Church.
The lectern only allows the normal sermon on its weekly sermon day.
That makes preparation worth doing beforehand. Keep the Prayer where you can retrieve it easily, finish Church improvements before the day arrives, and make sure you have enough Town Gratitude available.
Discovering that you are one Church Power short after the weekly opportunity has passed means waiting for the cycle to come around again.
I treat the day before the sermon as the point to check three things:
- the Prayer I plan to use;
- its start and guaranteed-success requirements;
- the lower value between Town Gratitude and Church Power.
That is enough to know whether the ceremony is ready without rebuilding the Church at the last minute.
Spend Early Faith Where It Removes a Real Blocker
Faith has several competing uses, and the first few sermons do not produce enough to buy everything at once.
A nearby fast-travel waypoint can cost only 1 Faith to activate. When a route is already forcing several long walks between the same areas, that is a very efficient early purchase.
Inspirations become more expensive as they progress. Some later Inspiration choices can require 5 Faith for another point, which makes casually buying every available perk much harder to justify.
Resurrection also consumes Faith when you begin creating your own zombie workers. The corpse preparation, collars, Reanimation Liquid and powered resurrection equipment are covered in Zombie Automation & Resurrection.
The practical choice depends on what is costing time right now.
Spend the point on a waypoint when repeated travel is the immediate bottleneck. Spend Faith on an Inspiration when that perk or Mastery increase removes an active restriction. Keep a reserve when resurrection or another known Faith expense is already part of the next objective.
Buying every glowing option as soon as Faith arrives is the quickest way to be short when a much more useful unlock appears.
Improve the Smaller Side Before the Next Sermon
Once sermons are running, increasing Faith income becomes a simple comparison.
Look at Town Gratitude and Church Power.
Whichever number is smaller is the side that deserves attention before the next sermon. Then compare that value with the requirement of the Prayer you want to use.
For the early Basic Prayer, reaching 8 is enough for guaranteed success. A later Faith Prayer can ask for 15. As the town grows and the Church improves, sermons move from a small weekly payout into a much stronger source of Faith.
That is the point where spending Faith stops feeling like a permanent sacrifice: you have built a repeatable way to earn it back.
