Where Is the Astrologer in Graveyard Keeper 2?

Quick Answer

Finish the first town battle and open the Port, then speak with Jack. He points you toward the Astrologer’s observatory, the strange tower built into a giant foot-shaped structure.

The Astrologer is Gunter. If you need Comet’s Tail for the fairy quest, buy one from his trade menu.

The first time the story asked me to find the Astrologer, the difficult part was not recognizing him. It was reaching the part of town where he actually lives.

The Comet’s Tail objective appears while the Port is still tied to the zombie conflict. Until that area is secured, searching side streets and checking random buildings does not solve anything.

Once the first large town battle is over, the route becomes much more direct: speak with Jack, look for the bizarre observatory he describes, meet Gunter and buy the item you came for.

Gunter remains useful afterward, but his other tasks do not all need to be completed during that first visit.

Open the Port Before Searching for the Astrologer

The Astrologer enters the story after the fairy mixture reaches the Comet’s Tail stage.

By then, Dream Dust can already be finished, but the person carrying the next ingredient is on the Port side of town.

The key restriction is territorial.

You need to complete the first large town battle and secure the newly accessible section before the Astrologer route becomes practical. Winning that fight opens the direction toward the Port and brings you into contact with Jack on the safe side.

If the town is still blocking you, continue the Walkthrough through the Bell and first battle rather than looking for an alternate path to the observatory.

Jack Gives the Astrologer’s Location Clue

Speak with Jack after the area opens and ask where to find the Astrologer.

His answer sounds like a joke:

the observatory is a tower attached to a foot

The landmark makes sense once you see the building. Instead of searching normal houses around the Port, look for the strange giant foot or boot-shaped structure with the observatory built into it.

There is no additional crafting requirement between Jack’s clue and meeting the Astrologer. Once the Port route is available, the remaining problem is simply finding the correct building.

Gunter Is the Astrologer

Inside the observatory, the NPC introduces himself with a more elaborate name, then tells you to call him Gunter.

Gunter introducing himself as the Astrologer in Graveyard Keeper 2
The Port Astrologer is Gunter, so later objectives using either name are referring to the same character.

That name matters later because the game stops relying exclusively on “Astrologer.” His favors and later story conversations refer to Gunter directly.

There is no second Astrologer NPC somewhere else in town.

Buy One Comet’s Tail From Gunter

For the fairy quest, Gunter is primarily a merchant.

Talk to him about Comet’s Tail, then open his trade inventory.

Comet's Tail in Gunter's trade inventory in Graveyard Keeper 2
Comet's Tail is sold directly by Gunter, so the fairy quest does not require another gathering route or crafting recipe here.

You only need one Comet’s Tail for this stage.

That makes the purchase straightforward: take the one required for the current objective and leave the rest of Gunter’s inventory alone unless another immediate task needs it.

Once Comet’s Tail is in your inventory, return to the fairy sequence.

The Alchemy Lab, Dream Dust research and earlier ingredient steps are covered in Dream Dust.

Gunter’s Other Goods Can Be Expensive This Early

Comet’s Tail is not the only unusual item in the observatory.

Gunter’s trade inventory also includes zombie-related supplies. One of the clearest early examples is Reanimation Liquid for 7 silver, while Blue Crystals are shown at 75 copper.

Seven silver is not a casual purchase during this part of the game.

Town fighting, rebuilding and other progression can all compete for the same money, so I would not buy Reanimation Liquid simply because it appears in the shop. It makes more sense when another zombie is actually being prepared and the liquid is the missing ingredient.

For the corpse, Red Skull, collar, Faith and resurrection requirements, use Zombie Automation & Resurrection.

Gunter Has Three More Zombies, but Wants a Favor

Talking about the zombies you already received reveals another opportunity.

Gunter says he has three more zombies.

They are not simply added to your workforce during the conversation. Gunter asks for a favor first: recover his missing tarot cards.

This is where his storyline branches away from the immediate Comet’s Tail objective.

If the fairy quest is your priority, take Comet’s Tail and leave. The tarot-card favor can be handled when you are already spending time rebuilding the Port.

Gunter Sends You to Linda for His Tarot Cards

Ask about the favor and Gunter tells you exactly where to start:

Find Linda and collect my tarot cards.

Gunter asking the Keeper to find Linda and collect his tarot cards in Graveyard Keeper 2
Gunter's favor begins with Linda, who currently has his missing tarot-card deck.

This part is easy to misread as a simple delivery errand.

It is not.

Linda has the cards, but reaching her does not immediately put them in your inventory.

Linda Will Not Give the Tarot Cards Back Immediately

Find Linda in the Port and ask about Gunter’s tarot deck.

She acknowledges that she has it, then refuses to hand it over.

Her reason leads into the recovery of the Port. Gunter once predicted that the old shop in the Port would open again, and Linda wants that prediction to come true.

Linda explaining that the old shop in the Port needs to open again in Graveyard Keeper 2
Linda keeps Gunter's tarot cards until the old Port shop is restored and properly supplied.

The required state is not merely talking to another NPC.

Linda wants the Port business open and well supplied.

That means the tarot-card task has become part of the town-rebuilding work.

The Tarot Cards Can Wait While You Need Materials Elsewhere

The nearby commercial area contains several rebuilding projects, including spaces for businesses such as an apothecary, vegetable stand and tailor.

Those repairs start consuming construction materials that may also be needed back at the base or for story progression.

One observed Port rebuilding state called for substantial kit production, including:

  • 8 Building Kits
  • 9 Wooden Kits
  • 3 Iron Kits

Those numbers make the tradeoff important.

I would not empty every chest just to recover Gunter’s deck while the main story is waiting on a more important workstation, Forest access or combat upgrade. Linda’s condition does not disappear, and Gunter remains at the observatory.

Finish the Port recovery when its rewards are worth the material cost, then return for the cards.

You Do Not Need the Tarot Cards to Finish the Fairy Step

Comet’s Tail and the tarot-card favor happen around the same NPC, but they are not the same requirement.

For the fairy sequence:

meet Gunter → buy Comet’s Tail → return with the ingredient

The tarot cards can remain unfinished.

That separation saves a significant detour because Linda’s request can expand into Port rebuilding rather than a quick item pickup.

Once the fairy sequence moves on, the main route eventually takes you through the Forest and toward the cursed swamp.

Gunter becomes important again later for a completely different reason.

Return to Gunter After the Nature Goddess and Portal Clues

After reaching the Nature Goddess, the story begins focusing more directly on the damaged magic portal.

The question is no longer where to find Comet’s Tail.

You need someone who knows what happened during the earlier portal activation, and the information eventually sends you back to Gunter.

Ask him about the magic portal.

Gunter admits that he stayed out of most of that work himself, but he remembers someone who was directly involved and may know how the portal functions.

That person provides the next concrete lead.

The Portal Lead Points to Royal Foundry

According to Gunter, the person connected to the original portal activation was last seen in an underground foundry beneath the old bath house.

The old bath house is on the north side of town.

Going straight through the remaining zombie territory is not the only option. Gunter gives a shortcut:

use the Foundry’s water tunnel near the navigation lock

Gunter explaining the water tunnel route toward Royal Foundry in Graveyard Keeper 2
Gunter points toward a water tunnel near the navigation lock as the route to the underground Royal Foundry.

He learned about the route from Jack, who used to maintain both the navigation lock and the tunnel.

The person you are trying to reach is also not an ordinary blacksmith. Gunter describes him as a former bishop, now a monk.

That gives you a usable route instead of a vague portal objective:

Gunter → navigation lock → water tunnel → Royal Foundry

From there, return to the Walkthrough for the wider story progression around the portal and Royal Foundry.
