How to Enter the Abandoned Tower in Graveyard Keeper 2

Quick Answer

Continue Dust in the Kitchen until the NPC it sends you to reaches 10 Friendship, then speak to him again. Return to Larry to open the basement, follow the route to the Plague Doctor, and get the Secret Combination.

Then go back upstairs to the Abandoned Tower and open it. The Inquisitor Medallion comes from the opening escape and should already have been collected.

The Abandoned Tower can stay locked even when it feels like I have already done everything the game asked for.

The step I would check first is not the tower itself. The easy-to-miss trigger happens earlier in Dust in the Kitchen. Reaching the required Friendship number does not finish that part automatically; the conversation still has to be advanced.

That makes this route much easier once it is treated as a short sequence rather than a hunt for another key, technology or crafting material:

Dust in the Kitchen → 10 Friendship → talk again → Larry → basement → Plague Doctor → Secret Combination → Abandoned Tower

Continue Dust in the Kitchen Until You Reach 10 Friendship

Open your quest log and continue Dust in the Kitchen first.

Speak with the Innkeeper, then follow that quest to the NPC he sends you to. The important number is 10 Friendship.

You can reach that amount naturally while progressing the early quests. Once the relationship is already at 10, there is no reason to keep doing unrelated tasks just to push the value higher.

What matters is speaking to that NPC again after the requirement is met.

I had already reached the required Friendship and still looked elsewhere for the tower solution because nothing changed automatically. Continuing that conversation was what moved the route forward.

Return to Larry and Open the Basement

After the Friendship conversation advances, go back to your home at the Inquisitor base and speak with Larry.

This part opens the route into the basement beneath the house.

A locked basement means the progression chain is still earlier than the Abandoned Tower. Buying more crafting materials, unlocking another alchemy technology or repeatedly checking the tower door will not replace the missing quest conversation.

Get the basement open first.

Once the new underground route is available, head down and start following it instead of returning to the tower immediately.

Follow the Footprints to the Plague Doctor

Deeper in the basement, the route leads toward a set of footprints. Follow them until you reach the strange man hiding underground.

After the basement opens, the footprints point you toward the Plague Doctor instead of another tower interaction.

This is the Plague Doctor.

The fairy-related progression may be what first sends you looking for him, but for the tower the important part of the conversation is much simpler: he knows what is missing from the locked entrance.

He explains that opening the tower gate involves both the Inquisitor Medallion and a Secret Combination.

The second item is the one most likely to be blocking you.

You Already Get the Inquisitor Medallion Near the Start

The Inquisitor Medallion is not a late-game purchase and it is not hidden behind another alchemy recipe.

During the opening escape, the note near the wall stash points you to several items left behind. Opening that stash gives you the Inquisitor Medallion along with the other early quest items.

The Inquisitor Medallion comes from the opening wall stash, long before the Abandoned Tower becomes the active blocker.

By the time the Abandoned Tower matters, the Medallion should therefore already have been collected through normal progression.

That is why I would not leave the base and start searching shops or later areas for another medallion. When the tower is still locked at this stage, check the Plague Doctor route instead.

Get the Secret Combination From the Plague Doctor

Ask the Plague Doctor about the situation at the base.

He confirms that the tower gate needs a medallion and a secret combination, and he has the missing combination.

The Plague Doctor identifies the two tower requirements: the Inquisitor Medallion and the Secret Combination.

Complete that conversation before leaving.

Once the Secret Combination has been obtained through this sequence, head back upstairs to the tower at your Inquisitor base.

Use the newly unlocked interaction at the entrance to open the door.

There is no extra shop purchase to make at this point. The progression gate was the quest chain leading to the Plague Doctor.

If the Abandoned Tower Is Still Locked, Check These Steps in Order

Going back through the route in order is faster than testing random crafting stations or leaving the area for another quest.

  1. Dust in the Kitchen is active or has progressed far enough.
  2. You reached 10 Friendship with the NPC connected to that quest.
  3. You spoke to him again after reaching 10.
  4. You returned to Larry and opened the basement.
  5. You followed the underground route to the Plague Doctor.
  6. You completed the conversation about the tower and the Secret Combination.
  7. You already collected the Inquisitor Medallion from the opening wall stash.
  8. You returned upstairs to the Abandoned Tower after completing those steps.

The most deceptive failure is step 3. A Friendship value of 10 can make the requirement look finished, but the story still needs the follow-up conversation.

The other common mistake is treating the tower as a crafting gate. It is a story gate first. More materials do not help until the character progression has caught up.

Once the Tower Opens, Move On to the Alchemy Lab

Opening the Abandoned Tower gives you access to the old Alchemy Lab inside.

At that point the locked-door problem is finished. If you came here through the fairy route, the next blocker is producing Dream Dust with the laboratory equipment.

Do not spend time experimenting with every alchemy option just because the room has opened. Follow How to Make Dream Dust for the ingredient research, recipe and hand-in sequence, then continue the story from there.
