Quick Answer
To start Chapter 3, board Lid’s airship at the end of Chapter 2. After the crash in Olderion, travel northeast to Olderion, the Aquapolis. Gather information in the city, find Nichol near the northwestern canal, and follow him to the Cave of Waters. You must rescue Luka before the party can make progress toward the Water Shrine.
Chapter 3 takes Rain’s party to Olderion in pursuit of the Water Crystal. The shrine is protected by the Wardens of the Waters, and gaining access requires resolving the corruption threatening the city.
The journey leads through the Cave of Waters, Old Town, Lake Dorr, Waterfall Way, and finally the Water Shrine. Water-level controls, boat routes, and the shrine’s movable-crate puzzle create several obstacles along the way.
Reach Olderion After the Airship Crash
Chapter 3 opens aboard Lid’s newly repaired airship. During the flight toward Olderion, the engines begin failing and Lid is forced to make an emergency landing.
The crash is part of the story. There is no repair material to collect or alternative landing sequence to trigger.
Once the party regains control, head northeast from the landing area toward Olderion, the Aquapolis.
You may encounter optional Vision Crystal Sanctums during your travels. The Olderion region contains Visions associated with Firion, Tidus, and Squall, but completing these encounters is not necessary to reach the city or begin the Water Crystal investigation.
Enter Olderion and gather information from the marked residents.
The first useful discovery is that the city’s canals contain sacred water, maintained by a group known as the Wardens of the Waters. Their protection also extends to the Water Shrine.
One resident explains that the shrine itself can be reached, but its entrance is sealed. Only a Warden can remove the barrier.
Find Nichol by the Northwestern Canal
After collecting the required information, head toward the northwestern canal and speak with Nichol.
Nichol is both a military strategist and a Warden of the Waters. He initially refuses to open the Water Shrine because he does not trust outsiders with access to the protected crystal.
The conversation is interrupted by a report of monsters inside the Cave of Waters. Nichol leaves to investigate.
Rather than travelling straight to the sealed shrine, regroup with Fina and Lid and follow Nichol to the cave.
The Cave of Waters is northeast of Olderion. Helping its inhabitants gives the party an opportunity to gain Nichol’s cooperation.
Rescue Luka in the Cave of Waters
Enter the Cave of Waters northeast of Olderion. The route toward Luka uses glowing water-level controls and small boats to connect different parts of the cave.
Nichol joins the party during the investigation. Your objective is to reach Luka, the Water Maiden whose prayers normally purify Olderion’s water.
Use the Water Controls to Reach the Boat
Look for the glowing control pedestals beside the waterways. Interacting with them changes the water level and allows you to access the boat routes.
At the rocky ledge marked by a wooden directional sign, a small boat can be brought into position beside the boarding point.
Continue through the connected passages toward Luka.
Rescue Luka From the Monsters
Near Luka’s location, a large monster appears with two smaller enemies.
Nichol recommends a specific target order:
- Defeat the two smaller enemies in front.
- Concentrate your attacks on the larger monster.
Once the encounter is cleared, Luka is rescued. Return to Olderion with her to investigate the city’s corrupted waterways.
Purify the Three Waterways in Olderion
Luka is Nichol’s sister and the Water Maiden responsible for keeping Olderion’s water clean.
Return to the Aquapolis with her.
Although the city’s waterways still appear clear to an ordinary observer, Nichol explains that the corruption is not visually detectable without a Warden’s abilities.
Three important locations in the city must be examined.
Follow Nichol and Luka to each marked purification point, completing their interactions in sequence.
At the first site, Luka attempts to cleanse the water with her song. The ceremony has some effect, but the corruption does not disappear completely.
Continue to the remaining marked locations rather than repeating the first interaction.
The failure is important: it establishes that the contamination cannot be permanently removed by Luka’s normal purification alone.
After the three sites have been checked, the investigation moves to Old Town, Olderion, where monsters are beginning to appear.
Clear Old Town and Rescue Elle
After the purification attempts, monsters begin attacking Old Town. The Wardens try to defend the city, but reinforcements are needed in the northern district.
The party splits during the rescue. Nichol and Lasswell remain behind to hold the defensive line, while Rain leads the others north to help Elle.
This temporarily changes your available party members, so you cannot rely on Lasswell’s abilities during Rain’s part of the rescue.
Follow the objectives in this order:
- Head north through Old Town. Clear the monster groups threatening the residents.
- Find the wounded soldier. He reports that Elle is fighting a large monster farther east.
- Go east to reach Elle and Arsha. Defeat the remaining enemies and join the fight against the larger monster.
After the rescue, the party regroups. The attack has been stopped, but Olderion’s water remains corrupted.
Nichol suspects that something has happened to Leviathan, the guardian of Lake Dorr. The next objective is to investigate the lake.
How to Reach Lake Dorr
To reach Lake Dorr, return to the Cave of Waters and take the route through its northern exit.
Nichol explains that the lake lies beyond the cave. Continue through the passage and follow the route into the sacred area.
At Lake Dorr, the party discovers that Veritas of the Waters has used the Divine Sigil to drive Leviathan into a rage.
Defeat Leviathan by Destroying the Light Orbs
Luka attempts to calm Leviathan with her prayers, but Veritas of the Waters surrounds the Esper with light orbs that prevent her song from reaching it.
Destroying the orbs is the priority, not simply dealing damage to Leviathan.
During the encounter:
- Destroy the light orbs to remove the interference with Luka’s song.
- Attack Leviathan while the orbs are absent.
- Destroy the orbs again if they reappear before continuing to focus on Leviathan.
The orbs return during the battle, so clearing them once does not permanently remove the mechanic.
After the encounter and the following events, Leviathan is freed from Veritas’s influence. Luka remains at Lake Dorr to continue purifying its waters, while the rest of the party returns to Olderion.
Stay at the Inn After Returning to Olderion
Back in the Aquapolis, the party decides to rest before making its next move.
Go to the inn on the western side of Olderion and stay overnight.
This is a required story transition. The next emergency does not begin simply by walking around the city.
The following morning, the party discovers that much of Olderion has been flooded.
Veritas of the Waters has used the Divine Sigil to raise the water level around the city.
During the confrontation, Fina’s other persona emerges. Dark Fina temporarily takes her place and offers a way to use the Water Crystal to stop the flooding.
This is a story-driven change, not an equipment problem or a permanent loss of Fina’s normal abilities.
The next destination is Waterfall Way, northwest of Olderion.
Find the First Water Maiden’s Power in Waterfall Way
The Water Shrine is still sealed, so the party cannot go there directly.
Dark Fina explains that the group needs the power preserved at the Altar of the Water Maiden inside Waterfall Way.
Elle joins the expedition.
Travel northwest from Olderion and enter Waterfall Way.
The dungeon follows a series of passages, platforms, and waterfalls toward the altar. Continue through the connected route until you reach the inner chamber.
The party encounters the First Water Maiden, who agrees to entrust her power to the Wardens.
That is the required result. Simply discovering the altar’s location without completing the interaction does not open the way to the shrine.
Continue Through Amore to Warden’s Cape
After receiving the First Water Maiden’s power, leave Waterfall Way and continue toward the Town of Amore.
Amore is on the route to Warden’s Cape, where the newly obtained magic must be used to reveal the path to the Water Shrine.
You can use the town’s facilities before continuing to the shrine.
Reveal the Path at Warden’s Cape
Travel through Amore and continue to Warden’s Cape.
At the cape, Nichol and Elle use the power obtained from the First Water Maiden.
This reveals the previously inaccessible route to the Water Shrine.
Approach the shrine and allow the Warden to remove the protective barrier.
The entrance now becomes available.
Veritas of the Waters has anticipated this and attempts to exploit the opened barrier, so the party must continue toward the Water Crystal immediately.
Solve the Water Shrine Puzzles
The Water Shrine uses glowing water-level controls to change which routes are accessible. You will encounter boats, water channels, and movable wooden crates as you work toward the Water Crystal.
The glowing pedestals are interactive controls, not decorative objects. Activating one changes the water level in its connected area.
Use the Water Controls and Boats
Look for the glowing control pedestals beside the waterways. Boat boarding points are marked with wooden signs, and an available boat displays a Board prompt.
Use the nearby water-level control when a boat or crossing is inaccessible. Once the boat can be boarded, use it to reach the next platform and continue through the shrine.
Lower the Water and Build the Crate Bridge
One section contains a water-filled channel, movable wooden crates, and a glowing water-level control.
The crates need to form a continuous crossing, but you cannot use the finished bridge until the water has been raised again.
- Lower the water. Activate the glowing control near the crate puzzle to expose the floor.
- Move the crates. Push the wooden boxes into a continuous line connecting the two sides of the channel.
- Raise the water again. Return to the same control and activate it a second time.
- Cross the bridge. Walk across the connected crates once the water has risen.
If the boxes are already lined up but you cannot cross, the water may still be too low. Return to the glowing control and restore the water level rather than moving the boxes again.
Reach the Water Crystal
After crossing the crate bridge, continue through the accessible passages toward the shrine’s inner chamber.
Elle moves ahead of the party in an attempt to reach the Water Crystal before Veritas of the Waters. Follow the route deeper into the shrine until the story confrontation begins.
Defeat Veritas of the Waters
When the party reaches the Water Crystal, Elle is already attempting to amplify its power. His goal is to save both Rain and Olderion from the consequences of the flooding.
Veritas of the Waters intervenes and shatters the Water Crystal before the boss battle begins.
This is a scripted event. Reaching the chamber more quickly or defeating Veritas in fewer turns cannot prevent the crystal from breaking.
The party then confronts Veritas in battle. Defeat her to stop the immediate threat and continue the story.
What Happens After the Water Crystal Is Destroyed?
Although the crystal is shattered, Elle has already amplified its remaining power through his actions and Arsha’s amulet.
Dark Fina uses that power to protect Olderion and help Rain. The floodwaters eventually recede, and Fina returns to her familiar form.
After these events, return to Olderion to complete the remaining story objectives.
Return to Olderion and Finish Chapter 3
Return to Olderion after the Water Shrine confrontation.
Follow the marked objective to find Arsha and complete the story event involving Elle’s amulet.
The party then discusses where the Sworn Six are likely to strike next.
Nichol reasons that Zoldaad, home of the Fire Crystal, is the most likely immediate target. He agrees to accompany Rain’s party as its strategist.
The final objective is to travel to the port southeast of Olderion and take a ship toward Zoldaad.
Continue with the Chapter 4: Zoldaad walkthrough to reach Mozul Station, enter the imperial capital, infiltrate the weapons factory, and confront the threat to the Fire Crystal.
