Build a Wife Quest: All Item Locations
Follow Old Man Jackson's Build a Wife quest through the Park, Lakefront, Sewers and Mall, then finish the companion with a Toy Heart.
Updated:
Quick Answer
Accept Build a Wife from Old Man Jackson, then inspect the coat rack in the other room of his house. The materials arrive in a fixed sequence: branches from the Park → small stones near the Lakefront → mud from the Sewers → scrap metal from the Mall → Toy Heart from a Mall vending machine. The Toy Heart costs 25g. Add it last, let the companion come to life, then speak to Jackson again to learn Dark Blast.
Build a Wife Item Order
The quest is much easier once I stop treating it like a hidden crafting recipe. Jackson does not expect me to gather everything before construction begins. The coat rack reveals one requirement at a time, and each completed stage points toward the next region.
| Step | Item | Where to Get It | What Happens Next |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Branches | Park | Add them to the coat rack to reveal the lake clue |
| 2 | Small Stones | Near the Lakefront | Return to Jackson to reveal the Sewer clue |
| 3 | Mud | Sewers | Add it to reveal the Mall metal requirement |
| 4 | Scrap Metal | Mall | The structure asks for a heart |
| 5 | Toy Heart | Mall vending machine, 25g | Completes the companion |
| Reward | Dark Blast | Speak to Old Man Jackson afterward | New ritual learned |
The inefficient version of this quest is making five separate blind searches around town. The efficient version is letting the coat rack tell me exactly what type of material comes next, then combining those stops with anything else I already need in the same area.
Inspect the Coat Rack After Talking to Jackson
Old Man Jackson starts the task, but his dialogue alone does not give me a complete shopping list.
The object that controls the quest is the coat rack in the other room of his house. After accepting Build a Wife, I inspect it and begin construction there.
This explains why searching for the final ingredients immediately can feel aimless. The quest is designed as a chain of clues rather than one recipe screen.
I let each stage advance before worrying about the next one.
The first clue asks for branches and points toward the Park.
The Branches Are in the Park
The Park is the first material stop.
I look for the quest pickup rather than cutting random trees or trying to turn ordinary Wood into a substitute. The branches are already present in the area and stand out enough once I know what I am looking for.
After collecting them, I return to Jackson’s house and add them to the structure.
The coat rack then changes from an incomplete frame into the next clue: small stones near the lake.
That return trip is part of the quest structure. I cannot simply infer the rest of the recipe from the first requirement and skip every intermediate interaction.
Find the Small Stones Around the Lakefront
The second stop is the Lakefront.
I am looking for the small-stone quest pickup around the lakeside area, not a stack of ordinary stone mined elsewhere.
This trip can overlap naturally with another early system. Fisherman Herb is also at the Lakefront, so if I have not unlocked fishing yet, I can speak to him while I am already here. The fishing guide covers the rod and bait mechanics; fishing itself is not required to obtain the stones.
Once the stones are fitted onto the structure, Jackson’s strange construction project sends me somewhere less pleasant:
the Sewers.
The Mud Is a Sewer Pickup
The third requirement is mud, and the location clue is literal.
I go into the Sewers and look for the quest pickup there.
This is a good place to avoid overcomplicating the clue.
The Garbage Man and other Sewer interactions can make it tempting to search merchant inventories or assume the mud is produced through another quest. It is not. I only need the pickup.
The more practical concern is surviving the detour. The Sewers can add fights and status effects to what is otherwise a very short collection step, so if I am already low on health or carrying important loot, I recover before turning the mud run into a longer Sewer expedition.
After the mud is added back at Jackson’s house, the coat rack asks for metal from the Mall.
Scrap Metal Is the Mall Material
The fourth leg takes Build a Wife into a much busier region.
The requested material is Scrap Metal, found among the old equipment and debris in the Mall.
The Mall can easily pull me away from the reason I entered. Locked offices, combat progression, fishing, the Administrator and the Mine all compete for attention there.
Build a Wife does not require me to solve all of them.
If Scrap Metal is the only reason for the trip, I collect it and leave. If the main Mall route is already active, I combine the objectives rather than making a dedicated journey for one quest pickup.
The Mall walkthrough handles the actual F1, Hall Monitor, security and Administrator progression.
There is one more Build a Wife item worth handling before I leave the building.
Buy the Toy Heart From the Mall Vending Machine
After Scrap Metal is added to the coat rack, the structure finally needs something more specific than another building material:
a heart.
The solution is not hidden in a dungeon room and does not require another NPC chain.
A Mall vending machine sells a Toy Heart for 25g.
The item’s description makes the joke fairly obvious: it is a cheap plastic replacement for the real thing, which is exactly what Jackson’s creation needs.
If I already know the full sequence, the best route is to arrive at the Mall with at least 25g, collect the Scrap Metal, and buy the Toy Heart before going home.
That avoids turning the last two stages into separate cross-map journeys.
There is little reason to buy the Toy Heart much earlier than this. Elderfield has plenty of competing expenses during the opening hours, and the item does not move Build a Wife forward until the structure reaches its final stage.
Add the Toy Heart to Finish the Companion
Back at Jackson’s house, I add the Toy Heart to the coat rack.
That is the last material requirement.
There is no sixth pickup hidden behind this step.
The important thing after the animation is to talk to Old Man Jackson again. Walking away as soon as the companion is complete leaves the actual reward waiting in his dialogue.
Dark Blast Is the Final Reward
Jackson teaches Dark Blast after the companion is finished.
That makes Build a Wife more useful than its opening premise suggests. The individual materials are mostly simple pickups, but completing the cross-town chain adds a new ritual to my combat options.
The route itself is not difficult once the sequence is known. Travel is what makes it feel long.
The Shortest Build a Wife Route
If I am doing nothing except this quest, the full path is:
Jackson → Park → Jackson → Lakefront → Jackson → Sewers → Jackson → Mall → Jackson.
The final Mall leg can contain both Scrap Metal and the 25g Toy Heart, even though the coat rack does not formally request the heart until I return with the metal.
That is the one place where knowing the later step saves meaningful travel.
The Park, Lakefront and Sewer stages still need their coat-rack interactions in between because each one advances the construction and reveals the next clue.
I therefore do not waste time trying to gather every object before Jackson’s structure reaches the corresponding stage.
Follow the sequence, combine the two Mall needs into one trip, and Build a Wife becomes a straightforward multi-region quest rather than a map-wide scavenger hunt.
