How to Find and Rewind the Jack-in-the-Box Music Box

The Music Box can hide beside aisles, counters, or trash-bin clutter. This is the floor-search route and rewind check I use before the third song.

How to Find and Rewind the Jack-in-the-Box Music Box

Quick Answer

When the Jack-in-the-Box Music Box starts playing, I stop normal store work and search immediately. I lower the camera and check the nearest aisle, checkout base, shelf ends, trash-bin clutter, back room and bathroom side. I keep interacting until the box disappears; an interaction prompt alone does not confirm that the rewind worked.

The Jack-in-the-Box is difficult because it creates a search problem during an already busy Shift.

The box is small, sits near floor level and can blend into traps, trash bags, meat, shelf corners and other clutter. At the same time, customers and Entities may still be active.

The solution is not to run randomly through every room. I use one repeatable floor-search route and confirm the interaction before returning to combat or store work.

What the Three-Song Warning Means

The warning gives the Jack-in-the-Box a clear failure condition: do not let its song finish three times.

As soon as the music begins, I stop:

  • customer verification;
  • gas-pump work;
  • restocking;
  • cleaning;
  • optional shopping.

I finish an existing action only when it takes a moment and abandoning it would physically block my route. Otherwise, the Music Box becomes the immediate priority.

Shift At Midnight Jack-in-the-Box warning explaining that the Music Box must be rewound before three songs finish
The warning establishes the real objective: locate the Music Box and rewind it before the song completes three times.

I have not measured a reliable duration for each song. I therefore do not use a precise countdown or assume I have enough time to finish one more customer.

My safer rule is:

Start searching on the first song, not the second.

Where the Music Box Can Appear

I have confirmed the Music Box in two types of floor-level areas:

  • within the main store and aisle space;
  • beside trash-bin clutter.

These are confirmed sightings, not a complete spawn list.

Aisles and Shelf Ends

On the main floor, I check:

  • both ends of the nearest aisle;
  • the base of each shelf;
  • gaps between shelving and walls;
  • floor objects that break up the outline of the box.

I move the camera below normal customer height. Looking straight ahead while running through an aisle is not enough.

Checkout and Trash-Bin Clutter

The box is especially easy to miss near the checkout and trash areas because it can visually merge with other small objects.

I inspect:

  • the floor beside the counter;
  • the base of the checkout;
  • spaces behind nearby objects;
  • trash bags and bin-side clutter;
  • the route between the counter and the rear area.

One confirmed Music Box appeared beside trash-bin clutter. I check the outline of every small floor object instead of searching only open rooms.

What I Do Not Treat as a Fixed Spawn

I have not confirmed:

  • one guaranteed aisle;
  • one guaranteed side of the store;
  • an outdoor spawn;
  • a fixed bathroom location;
  • a complete list of possible positions.

I use the known locations to establish a search pattern, not to claim that the box always appears in the same place.

The Search Route I Use

My default route is:

Nearest aisle → checkout base → shelf ends → trash-bin clutter → back room → bathroom side → return through the main aisle

The route covers the largest open areas first and leaves small side spaces for the end.

When I Am Already Inside the Store

I begin with the nearest aisle.

I scan one side of the floor on the way down and the opposite side on the way back. That prevents me from checking the same shelf edge repeatedly.

I then pass the checkout, inspect the trash-bin area and continue toward the back room.

When I Am Outside or at the Gas Pump

I abandon the vehicle task and use the closest entrance.

Once inside, I check the first open aisle and the checkout route before moving into the back room. I do not start with a distant bathroom corner unless the sound began while I was already near it.

When I Am Near the Back Room or Bathroom

I check the nearby floor and corners first, then move outward:

Back room → bathroom side → trash-bin area → checkout → main aisles

This avoids crossing the whole store before checking the space already beside me.

Can the Music Box Be Tracked by Sound?

I have not confirmed that the song provides reliable directional audio or a consistent distance cue.

The music tells me that the event is active, but I do not currently use it to choose a specific room.

Until that behavior is tested cleanly, I rely on:

  1. my current position;
  2. the nearest floor route;
  3. confirmed clutter types;
  4. areas I have not already checked.

Headphones may make the cue easier to hear during combat, but I cannot yet say that turning toward the louder channel reveals the box’s location.

How to Rewind the Music Box

Finding the box is not the final confirmation.

My rewind sequence is:

  1. approach until the interaction prompt appears;
  2. face the Music Box directly;
  3. interact without backing away;
  4. allow the interaction to finish;
  5. confirm that the box disappears.

The completion rule is:

Box gone = rewind complete.

If it remains on the floor, I stay beside it and interact again. I do not leave because I heard an input sound or briefly saw a prompt.

I remain beside the Music Box until the rewind completes. The box disappearing is the reliable confirmation that the interaction registered.

Once it disappears, I listen briefly for the song and reassess the Shift.

The Hunt may continue because another Entity is still active. Rewinding the Music Box solves its special mechanic; it does not automatically clear every enemy in the store.

Solo Priorities

Solo is difficult because no teammate can control the store while I search.

My order is:

  1. Music Box
  2. an Entity physically blocking the search route
  3. an immediate threat that can down me
  4. every other enemy or store task

I do not stop to clear every creature before searching. I only create enough space to continue the route.

The Music Box itself does not require a purchased item. Before a dangerous Shift, I prepare enough ammunition, healing and entrance control to keep the floor accessible while I search.

The full defensive setup is covered in the Entities Guide.

Co-op Roles

In three-player co-op, I do not send the whole group to search.

Music Box Runner

The runner:

  • follows the floor-search route;
  • calls out cleared areas;
  • completes the rewind;
  • confirms that the box disappeared.

Entity Controller

This player:

  • holds the main attacker;
  • keeps enemies away from the runner;
  • maintains the safest path through the store.

Support Player

Support:

  • covers the second entrance;
  • handles healing and ammunition;
  • helps whichever role is interrupted.

The useful callouts are short:

Checking aisles.

Trash area clear.

Found the box.

Rewind complete.

When the Demented Appears at the Same Time

The Demented creates a specific co-op conflict.

Someone must observe it to keep it frozen, but someone else must still search for the Music Box.

My division is:

  • one player watches the Demented;
  • one player follows the Music Box route;
  • the third player prepares the trap lane and removes smaller blockers.

The Music Box runner does not join the Demented fight unless the creature blocks the only safe route.

For its complete observation and trap mechanic, use the Demented Guide.

Common Music Box Mistakes

  • Searching at normal eye level: the Music Box can remain below the visible edge of the screen.
  • Continuing a customer or gas task: this spends the safest part of the first song.
  • Running randomly between rooms: the same spaces get checked repeatedly while other areas remain untouched.
  • Leaving after one interaction: the input may not have completed unless the box disappears.
  • Sending every co-op player to search: no one remains to control the active Entity.
  • Assuming the Music Box ends the Hunt: another threat may remain after the rewind.
  • Read the Entities Guide for Blood Moon preparation, entrance defense and special-threat priorities.
  • Read the Demented Guide for the observation state, trap positioning and Freed achievement.
  • Read the Solo Guide for customer, shopping and survival priorities across all 13 shifts.

FAQ

What happens if the Jack-in-the-Box song finishes three times? +

I have not recorded the exact third-song failure result, so I cannot confirm whether it immediately kills the player, ends the Shift, or triggers another Entity state. I treat the third completed song as a failure condition and rewind the box before reaching it.

Can the Music Box appear again after I rewind it? +

I have not confirmed a true second spawn. One run required another search shortly after the first interaction, but that may have been an incomplete rewind rather than a new Music Box. I do not currently claim that it respawns.

Does every co-op player need to interact with the Music Box? +

I have not seen evidence that every teammate must perform the interaction. I assign one runner to finish the rewind while the other players control Entities and keep the route open.

Is the Jack-in-the-Box Music Box the Marionette? +

No. The Jack-in-the-Box is the floor-level Music Box that must be rewound. The Marionette is a separate Entity associated with the Last Performance achievement.
