How I Complete Prologos and Find the Black Box
The route I use for Prologos: start Isolated City on Default, find the Black Box through an Item Chest, keep it equipped, and finish the run.
Updated:
Quick Answer
To complete Prologos, I accept the mission and start Isolated City on Default.
The important part is:
open Item Chests until the Black Box appears → take it → keep it in my inventory → finish the run
Finding the Black Box is only half of the objective. Once I have it, I stop taking unnecessary risks and make sure I actually survive to the end.
Prologos rewards Friendship +3 and Cash +5000.
Prologos became much easier once I stopped treating the Black Box like a hidden object somewhere on the map.
I do not search buildings, hug the edge of Isolated City or wait for a special landmark.
I play the run normally and keep opening Item Chests until the Black Box appears as one of the item choices.
Then the mission changes completely.
Before I find it, I am searching.
After I find it, I am protecting the run.
What Prologos Actually Requires
The mission gives me a very specific setup:
Arena: Isolated City
Game Mode: Default
The objective is:
Find the Black Box item and complete the Run with it in your Inventory.
The reward shown for this mission is:
Friendship +3
and:
Cash +5000
That wording matters.
The objective is not:
find the Black Box.
It is:
find it and finish with it.
So I already know before pressing Play that one inventory slot will eventually belong to the mission item.
I Start Isolated City on Default
I do not add unnecessary difficulty to this mission.
My route is:
accept Prologos
→ Play
→ Isolated City
→ Default
Then I focus on making the run stable enough to last.
If my starting weapon cannot control the opening waves, I improve it.
If another Survivor would make the team significantly safer, I recruit.
I am not trying to prove that I can finish Prologos with the weakest possible setup.
The mission only cares that I find the item and complete the run with it.
The Black Box Appears Through an Item Chest
This was the part that originally sent me in the wrong direction.
The mission says find the Black Box, but that does not mean I need to search a fixed location in Isolated City.
In my 1.0 runs, the Black Box appeared through the normal Item Chest selection.
That changes how I move through the map.
I still prioritize survival, but I pay more attention to safe Item Chest opportunities.
I do not spend several minutes tracing the map boundary looking for a Black Box location.
I keep the run healthy and keep opening chests.
I Do Not Reset If the First Chests Miss
The Black Box does not need to appear immediately.
I have gone several minutes without seeing it.
That is not enough for me to assume the mission is bugged.
As long as:
- Prologos is active;
- I am in the correct run;
- and Item Chests are still appearing;
I continue.
The mistake would be restarting a stable run simply because the first few item opportunities did not produce the mission item.
I Take the Black Box When It Appears
When the Black Box finally shows up, I do not compare it against the other items for very long.
I take it.
The mission requires it, and the Black Box is not dead weight anyway.
Its item card gives two useful effects:
Every time I open an Item Chest, I receive a level-up.
SOS Signals grant Cash.
That makes finding it earlier especially useful.
Every later Item Chest can now improve the run twice:
new item opportunity
plus:
another level-up
SOS Signals also gain extra progression value.
So I am not weakening the build just to carry a quest object.
The Black Box can actively improve the rest of the attempt.
The Mission Is Not Finished When I Pick It Up
This is the real Prologos trap.
Once the Black Box is equipped, the mission tracker confirms that part of the objective.
But Complete the Run is still there.
At this point, I change how I play.
I no longer care about maximizing every possible pickup.
I care about bringing the item home.
That means:
- I keep moving instead of stopping in dangerous lanes.
- I do not chase an optional chest through a bad elite position.
- I stop making experimental upgrade choices if the current build already works.
- I never remove the Black Box from the inventory.
The mission is already mostly solved.
There is no reason to turn a good attempt into a risky one.
I Treat the Black Box Inventory Slot as Locked
Once I have the item, that slot belongs to Prologos.
If another item appears later and looks stronger, it has to compete with my other inventory slots.
The Black Box stays.
The objective explicitly checks that I complete the run with it in my inventory.
Replacing it late would undo the important part of the mission just to gain another item effect.
For me, that trade is never worth it during Prologos.
Item Chests Become Better After I Find It
I do not stop opening chests entirely.
The Black Box makes them more valuable because each one now also gives me a level-up.
So the distinction I make is:
safe chest → take it
risky chest → leave it
Before finding the Black Box, a chest may be necessary because I still need the mission item.
After finding it, a chest is a bonus.
That is a very different risk calculation.
If my route naturally passes one, great.
If reaching it means cutting through overlapping elite attacks, I keep moving.
SOS Signals Also Become More Valuable
The second Black Box effect gives Cash from SOS Signals.
That means an SOS can contribute to:
- team building;
- Survivor progression;
- permanent Cash progression.
But I still do not force every SOS interaction.
If my squad is already stable, I judge the event based on what the run needs.
If another Survivor improves the team, I recruit.
If I am already comfortable, the additional Cash value makes the SOS even more attractive.
The Black Box rewards me for interacting with systems I was already using rather than forcing me into a strange mission-only route.
I Build for the Finish, Not Just the Pickup
Finding the Black Box early does not mean I can use a weak team.
Most of the run may still be ahead of me.
So I do not deliberately hold back normal combat progression while waiting for the mission item.
If my main weapon needs another upgrade, I take it.
If movement is becoming the problem, I fix movement.
If the team needs another Survivor to stay stable, I recruit.
The full weapon and team decisions are covered in my builds and synergies guide.
For Prologos, I use one simpler test:
Can this team reliably finish Isolated City once the Black Box is equipped?
If the answer is no, I strengthen the run before worrying about optimization.
I Do Not Relax Before the Run Actually Ends
This is one habit I learned the hard way.
I have already had a run reach 19:58, mentally treat the job as finished, relax too early and lose the attempt.
So once the Black Box is secured, I do not count:
almost finished
as:
finished.
I keep playing until the game actually resolves the run.
The final seconds are not the time for an unnecessary chest, a risky detour or standing still because the timer looks close enough.
I finish first.
When I Would Come Back Later
Prologos itself is not mechanically complicated.
If I am repeatedly failing it, I check whether the real problem is simply that my account is not ready to finish a normal Isolated City Default run comfortably.
If I am dying early even before the Black Box becomes relevant, I stop forcing the mission.
I return to Camp, improve the weak part of the account, and come back.
That may mean:
- better starting weapon progression;
- more movement;
- stronger Survivors;
- another useful permanent upgrade.
I do not need a perfect build.
I only need enough stability that finding the Black Box is not followed by fifteen minutes of panic.
If the Black Box Still Is Not Appearing
If the run is progressing normally but I have not seen the Black Box yet, I check the basics before assuming something is wrong.
First, I make sure Prologos is actually active.
Then I confirm I started:
Isolated City
on:
Default.
After that, I keep opening Item Chests.
I do not search for a fixed Black Box location.
If the mission itself has disappeared or cannot be selected, that is a different problem, and I use my mission progression troubleshooting guide instead.
My Prologos Route
My complete route is:
accept Prologos
→ start Isolated City on Default
→ build enough early damage to stay comfortable
→ prioritize safe Item Chests
→ take the Black Box when it appears
→ keep it in the inventory
→ use later safe chests and SOS Signals for the extra value
→ stop taking unnecessary risks
→ finish the run
The most important thing I learned is that Prologos has two distinct phases.
Before the Black Box appears, I am trying to find it.
After it appears, I am trying not to ruin a run that is already on track to succeed.
