Ghost of Yotei Echoes of Sekigahara: How to Start
Complete the four prerequisites, meet Kojiro, accept Nagato the Handsome, and follow the marshland path into Ashoro Foothills.

Quick Answer
To start Echoes of Sekigahara, complete The Old Inn, The Way of Dual Katana, The Tale of the Oni, and The Kitsune’s Fate. Then go to Yotei’s Shadow Inn, speak with bounty broker Kojiro, and take Nagato the Handsome from the bounty board.
Accept the bounty and follow the marked path through the marshlands. It leads directly into Ashoro Foothills.
Echoes of Sekigahara starts through Nagato the Handsome, not through an unmarked entrance on the edge of Ezo.
Once the required story progress is complete, Kojiro gives you the lead on Nagato and marks the path into the closed-off Ashoro Foothills. Until that bounty appears, riding toward Ashoro will not bypass the requirement.
Nagato the Handsome Is Missing
If Nagato is not available, first confirm that all four prerequisite quests are complete.
After that, go to Yotei’s Shadow Inn and make sure you have spoken with Kojiro. Return to the bounty board afterward and look for Nagato the Handsome.
Hours played are not a useful substitute for those requirements. A save with extensive exploration can still be missing one of the quests that allows Kojiro’s lead to appear.
Do not search Ashoro itself while the bounty is still unavailable. The entrance becomes relevant only after Nagato’s objective is active.
Follow the Marshland Path Into Ashoro Foothills
Accept Nagato the Handsome and follow the new objective marker.
Kojiro explains that Saito closed Ashoro off from the rest of Ezo but that there is still a path through the marshlands. Follow the marked approach rather than looking for a normal regional road.
The opening sequence moves between Atsu’s present search for Nagato and memories from the Battle of Sekigahara. Keep following the active objective through those sections until Atsu is back on the Viper trail.
After meeting Nagato, the route leads farther into Viper territory and eventually toward Ashoro Springs. From that point, the problem is no longer getting into the expansion but following the regional mission chain.
Use the Ashoro Foothills walkthrough once you need the route through Ashoro Springs, Another Man’s Treasure, the Snake’s Estate, Mount Akan, A Buried Promise, and Dream’s End.
You Do Not Need to Finish the Main Story First
A completed Ghost of Yotei campaign is not required before starting Echoes.
The gate is the four prerequisite quests and the Kojiro interaction. Once Nagato’s bounty appears, you can enter Ashoro without first finishing the rest of Atsu’s main journey.
That does not mean every build will feel equally comfortable there. The first Viper camps introduce more ranged pressure, traps, armored enemies, and situations where losing control of Spirit can quickly make a fight harder to recover from.
Reliable healing and a melee setup you already understand are enough to begin. You do not need to delay Echoes until Atsu has a fully completed endgame build.
What Changes in the First Viper Encounters
Viper archers can suppress Spirit, which makes their ranged pressure more important than ordinary chip damage. If Spirit is compromised while melee enemies are already closing in, create space and deal with the ranged threat before committing to another long exchange.
Viper territory also uses trip lines and other traps around narrow approaches. Watch the ground when entering camps instead of sprinting directly toward the first enemy.
The expansion also introduces Massive Weapons during the early Ashoro sequence. These are temporary heavy weapons used against targets that resist normal pressure.
When Nagato calls out the weapon, pick it up and use it on the armored enemy. Massive Weapons are not a permanent addition to Atsu’s regular weapon slots, so there is no reason to save one after the encounter it was placed to help with.
More detailed Viper encounters and the regional route belong to the Ashoro story itself rather than the entry sequence.
How Long Does Echoes of Sekigahara Take?
The main story takes several hours if you stay close to the mission route.
A full Ashoro clear takes longer because the region also contains Storehouses, recipes, dye trade routes, minigames, wolf-related content, combat conditions, and other optional activities.
You do not need to finish those while progressing through the story. If Dream’s End is complete and you are working through the remaining requirements, use the Echoes of Sekigahara trophy guide to check what is still missing before sweeping Ashoro again.
Most Wanted Is Separate From Echoes
Most Wanted does not continue the Ashoro storyline.
Stay with Nagato and the Ashoro missions when you want to progress Echoes. Switch to Most Wanted when you want the run-based combat mode, permanent hunter progression, or Jin Sakai.
Progress in one mode is not required to continue the other.
