Dune Awakening Progression Guide: What to Do Next
Follow Dune Awakening progression from the Sandbike through Iron, Steel, Aluminum, the Scout Ornithopter, story quests, and Deep Desert preparation.
Updated:
Quick Answer
The main progression route is:
Sandbike → Vermillius Gap → Iron → Steel → Cutteray Mk3 → Medium Ore Refinery → Aluminum → Scout Ornithopter → later story → Deep Desert.
For your first Aluminum, use the handheld Cutteray Mk3 in the Eastern Shield Wall or another Aluminum region. The Buggy Cutteray Mk3 cannot mine Aluminum; vehicle mining starts with the Buggy Cutteray Mk4.
When Aluminum can be produced repeatedly, put the Scout Ornithopter ahead of optional Aluminum-heavy upgrades.
Dune Awakening opens contracts, Journeys, Trials, research, Testing Stations and vehicle recipes much faster than all of them need to be completed.
The route becomes easier to read when each material tier has a clear purpose. Iron supports the first major equipment upgrades. Steel leads into the Cutteray Mk3 and Medium Ore Refinery. Those two unlock practical Aluminum production, and Aluminum makes the first Scout Ornithopter possible.
| Stage | Main Goal | Where to Go | Move On When |
|---|---|---|---|
| Opening | Sandbike and basic survival | Hagga Basin South | The Journey sends you north and the Sandbike is ready |
| Iron | Iron tools and equipment | Eastern / Western Vermillius Gap | Iron farming, water and repairs are routine |
| Steel | Cutteray Mk3 and Medium Ore Refinery | Vermillius Gap / Jabal Eifrit | Steel can be produced in large batches |
| First Aluminum | Mine and refine Aluminum | Eastern Shield Wall / Mysa Tarill | Cutteray Mk3 and Medium Ore Refinery are ready |
| Bulk Aluminum | Increase mining yield and hauling | Eastern Shield Wall | Aluminum trips are frequent enough to justify better hauling |
| Flight | Scout Ornithopter Mk4 | Hagga Basin component locations | The aircraft is assembled, fueled and usable |
| Late Hagga Basin | Finish major Journeys and high-tier preparation | Northern Hagga Basin | High-tier trips no longer empty your supplies |
| Deep Desert | Begin repeatable late-game runs | Deep Desert | Water, fuel, repairs, combat gear and flight are sustainable |
Opening Progression — Get the Sandbike and Move North
The opening Journey teaches water, shelter, refining and fabrication. Build enough infrastructure to keep those systems working, but there is little reason to finish every activity in Hagga Basin South before leaving.
The Sandbike is the first major travel upgrade. Once it is operational and the Journey begins sending you toward Vermillius Gap, prepare water and fuel for the crossing and start moving north.
Open sand is still dangerous with a Sandbike. Use rock when possible, watch for drum sand and carry enough water that one detour does not turn the trip into an emergency.
Funcom currently recommends avoiding relocation with the Base Reconstruction Tool because of reports of missing, misplaced or overlapping building pieces. If the southern base is becoming inconvenient, establishing a smaller northern base is safer than packing the structure you already depend on.
For actual building areas and terrain checks, use Best Base Locations & When to Move.
Iron — Start in Vermillius Gap
Iron Ore becomes common in Eastern and Western Vermillius Gap.
A Cutteray Mk1 can harvest Iron, and a Small Ore Refinery can process it into Iron Ingots. Water becomes more important at this point because mining enough ore is only useful when the refinery can keep running after you return.
Prioritize equipment that removes an immediate restriction: harvesting tools, repairs, survival gear and the machines needed for the next material tier.
Imperial Testing Stations also begin appearing around this stage. Their component loot becomes increasingly useful later, but an available facility does not need to be cleared immediately. If one station consumes nearly all your ammunition and healing, improve the current equipment and return later.
Steel — Add Carbon and Stop Farming One Recipe at a Time
Steel requires a larger production loop.
Iron is still part of that loop, while Carbon Ore pulls mining farther north toward the Jabal Eifrit regions. Bring back enough material for several crafts instead of repeatedly leaving the base whenever one recipe turns red.
The first large requirement is the Medium Ore Refinery.
Its recipe requires:
- 125 Steel Ingots
- 45 Cobalt Paste
- 35 Complex Machinery
A 125-Steel requirement is much faster to solve as one planned production job. Gather the Iron and Carbon in bulk, make sure the refineries have enough water, and keep the process running until the full requirement is covered.
If this still feels expensive enough to stop every other project, stay in the Steel stage a little longer.
Craft the Handheld Cutteray Mk3 Before Farming Aluminum
The handheld Cutteray Mk3 is the harvesting upgrade that opens the first reliable Aluminum runs.
It can mine:
- Iron
- Carbon
- Erythrite
- Basalt
- Aluminum
Because the Cutteray Mk3 uses Steel-tier materials, it can be prepared before Aluminum production exists.
This prevents one of the easiest wasted trips in the mid-game: reaching an Aluminum deposit and discovering that the current tool cannot harvest it.
For the next step, have both of these ready:
Cutteray Mk3 + Medium Ore Refinery
One gets the ore out of the ground; the other turns it into the Ingots needed for the next tier.
First Aluminum — Eastern Shield Wall
The Eastern Shield Wall is one of the most useful regions for the first serious Aluminum trips. Aluminum also appears around Mysa Tarill, but the Shield Wall offers a practical route before Deep Desert progression becomes necessary.
Mine the deposits with the handheld Cutteray Mk3, return the ore to the Medium Ore Refinery and begin producing Aluminum Ingots.
The sequence is:
Cutteray Mk3 → Aluminum Ore → Medium Ore Refinery → Aluminum Ingots
Do not wait until every possible Aluminum-tier recipe can be afforded. The first goal is to make production repeatable enough that a new batch can process while you are away collecting other materials.
That is the point where the Scout Ornithopter starts becoming realistic.
Do You Need a Buggy Before the Ornithopter?
Not for the first Aluminum.
The important difference is between the handheld and vehicle Cutterays.
The handheld Cutteray Mk3 can mine Aluminum.
The Buggy Cutteray Mk3 cannot.
A Buggy only becomes an Aluminum mining vehicle after it can use the Buggy Cutteray Mk4.
That creates two sensible routes.
If handheld mining plus the Sandbike is producing enough Aluminum for the Scout Ornithopter, keep moving toward flight.
If repeated Aluminum runs have become the slowest part of the game, a Buggy with a Mk4 Cutteray and storage can turn those trips into much larger mining runs.
The Buggy is therefore optional for reaching Aluminum but much more valuable for bulk Aluminum farming.
Keep the Trials of Aql Near Your Current Region
The Fremen Journey runs alongside the material route and is easier to handle when it is not left several regions behind.
You do not need to stop everything and clear all eight Trials consecutively. Complete them as the Journey moves through the parts of Hagga Basin you are already using.
When a Trial entrance, survey, puzzle or final objective is stopping that Journey, use the All 8 Trials of Aql Walkthrough.
Then return to the material route instead of turning every Trial into a separate progression phase.
Stable Aluminum — Start the Scout Ornithopter
A few Aluminum Ingots are not enough to make the aircraft comfortable to build.
Start once the Medium Ore Refinery can keep Aluminum production running while you leave the base for high-tier components.
The Scout requires Aluminum along with materials such as Industrial Pumps, Particle Capacitors, Armor Plating, Advanced Servoks and Cobalt Paste. At this stage, spending every new Aluminum batch on optional weapons or convenience upgrades can delay the vehicle that removes far more travel time.
The Scout Ornithopter Guide covers the Mk4 parts, component sources, assembly, fuel and storage.
Once the aircraft is in the air, use it before immediately spending another large batch of materials upgrading it.
After Flight — Push the Longer Story Routes
The Scout Ornithopter makes distant objectives much cheaper to revisit.
Trainer visits, northern component runs and unfinished Journeys no longer require the same cliff detours and long Sandbike returns, which makes this a good stage to push the larger story chains.
If The Great Convention is active, the Great Convention Parts I–III / Acts 3–5 Walkthrough covers the investigation, Neo Carthag arena, Fallen Light, Zanovar and the Orbital Monitor.
Keep the Scout fueled and protected from storms, then use the mobility you just unlocked instead of immediately turning the next several sessions into another vehicle project.
When Should You Start the Deep Desert?
Being able to reach the Deep Desert is not the same as being ready to make repeated trips there.
Before treating it as the next regular destination, make sure you already have:
- a working Scout Ornithopter;
- dependable water reserves;
- enough fuel for the outbound and return flight;
- repair materials for the tools and vehicle parts you use;
- combat equipment capable of handling current high-tier facilities;
- production that can replace the materials consumed during a normal run.
Industrial Pumps, EMF-related components, Silicone Blocks and Cobalt Paste should already be materials you know how to replenish.
If one high-tier Hagga Basin trip consumes most of your healing, ammunition, fuel and repair stock, there is still useful preparation to finish before making the Deep Desert routine.
Single Player uses different Deep Desert persistence rules. Solo players should check the Single Player Guide before applying multiplayer reset assumptions there.
If Progression Stops, Check What Is Actually Missing
Different stalls need different fixes.
The recipe is unavailable: check the Journey, research requirement, Intel or trainer progression. Gathering more raw material will not unlock a recipe.
The deposit is visible but cannot be harvested: check the Cutteray tier before returning to the resource. Aluminum is the clearest example.
The recipe needs an unusually large quantity: stop relying on small scavenging trips and collect a full production batch.
Repeated hauling is taking too long: decide whether the Buggy and its storage now justify their material cost.
Travel itself is consuming most of the session: finish the Scout Ornithopter.
Identifying the missing requirement before leaving the base prevents many of the longest unnecessary trips in Hagga Basin.
