Dune Awakening Best Base Locations & When to Move

Quick Answer

For the first base, avoid committing to the first flat patch near the opening route. Look for a small respawning scavenger camp in Hagga Basin South with Copper, Stone, Fuel Cells, Salvaged Metal and bodies nearby.

For Iron and Steel, establish your main working base in Vermillius Gap near several repeat activities. When Aluminum becomes a regular requirement, a northern outpost toward the Eastern Shield Wall / Jabal Eifrit Al-Gharb can shorten those trips.

Funcom currently recommends avoiding relocation with the Base Reconstruction Tool because it can cause missing, misplaced or overlapping building pieces. Add a smaller second base instead of packing an established one for now.

The strongest base location changes as the resource route moves north.

Early on, short access to Copper, salvage and bodies matters most. Vermillius Gap is better once Iron, Steel, Testing Stations and contracts occupy most of the run. Aluminum pulls repeated trips farther north, while the Scout Ornithopter eventually reduces the value of saving a few hundred meters of ground travel.

Best Starter Base — Build Near a Respawning Camp

A useful first base in Hagga Basin South should shorten several early resource loops at once.

Look for a small scavenger camp with Copper and Stone nearby and repeatable access to:

  • Fuel Cells
  • Salvaged Metal
  • loot containers
  • bodies for blood

A small scavenger camp can supply salvage, Fuel Cells and bodies while Copper and Stone remain close enough for the first crafting loop.

Build near the camp rather than directly on its combat path. Saving a few seconds of walking is not worth an awkward foundation or an entrance surrounded by enemies.

The first structure only needs enough room for water processing, basic refining, fabrication, storage and Sandbike access. Avoid sinking a large amount of material into decorative expansion or duplicate machinery before the Journey starts moving north.

When Should You Leave the Starter Area?

The southern base has done its job once the Sandbike is operating and most new objectives are pulling into Vermillius Gap.

Normally, that would also be the point where Base Reconstruction becomes tempting. Under the current known issue, packing an established base is not the safest option.

The Base Reconstruction Tool also has location restrictions even when it is working normally: backing up and restoring a base is limited to Hagga Basin, and restoration cannot overlap another landclaim, a no-building zone or a vehicle.

For progression through the Sandbike, Iron and Steel stages, use the Progression Guide.

Vermillius Gap — Build Near Imperial Testing Station No. 2

For the Iron and Steel stage, the wider area around Imperial Testing Station No. 2 is a strong place to search for buildable ground.

The Testing Station is only one reason. The surrounding region gives access to several activities that become relevant at the same time: facilities, caves, contracts, component runs and the normal Iron-stage production loop.

Look for workable ground around the wider Imperial Testing Station No. 2 area rather than forcing the base directly beside one marker.

A base beside a single Iron deposit saves time during one mining run. A base near several repeat destinations saves time across repairs, contracts, facilities and material runs.

Search around the edge of the activity cluster until you find ground that can actually support a growing structure.

Test the Foundation Before Moving Production In

A good map position can still be a bad building site.

One Vermillius Gap location looked suitable until the first placement produced Not Enough Support.

Not Enough Support error while building on uneven ground in Dune Awakening
Test the foundation, entrance and expansion direction before filling a new location with machines and storage.

Raising the foundation can solve support and create another problem if the entrance ends up too high for a clean ramp.

Before committing machinery and storage, test:

  • whether the first foundation sits cleanly;
  • whether the building can expand in the intended direction;
  • whether a ramp can reach usable ground;
  • whether Sandbikes and larger vehicles have a clear approach;
  • whether nearby cliffs will interfere with later aircraft landing space.

Moving the footprint sideways by a few hundred meters is usually cheaper than fighting bad terrain every time the building expands.

Plan Vehicle Access Before Filling the Base

Characters can squeeze through layouts that become frustrating once hauling depends on vehicles.

Leave one clear route from open terrain to the building before surrounding the structure with machines. If you want an interior vehicle bay or ramp, test it while foundations are still easy to change.

The same space becomes more useful after the Scout Ornithopter arrives. A late-Hagga-Basin base benefits from an open landing area without tall cliffs, machinery or uneven foundation edges directly around it.

For the aircraft itself, use the Scout Ornithopter Guide.

Aluminum Stage — Look Toward the Eastern Shield Wall

Do not build another major base just because the first Aluminum deposit appears.

A northern position becomes valuable once Aluminum farming is happening repeatedly, not when Aluminum is merely visible on the map.

The Eastern Shield Wall / Jabal Eifrit Al-Gharb side shortens access to Aluminum and later northern objectives while keeping Vermillius Gap and the earlier material regions within practical reach.

Before spending resources on an outpost there, make sure the current equipment can actually harvest Aluminum and that the Medium Ore Refinery is ready to process it.

The Progression Guide covers the Cutteray Mk3, first Aluminum runs and the later Buggy Mk4 mining route.

With the current Reconstruction warning, establish this as a new Sub-fief or compact outpost instead of packing the Vermillius base.

Build Near a Resource Only When the Trip Repeats

A rare resource is not automatically a reason to build.

One required load is a farming trip.

Several repeated loads that also require storage, water, processing and repairs can justify local infrastructure.

This distinction becomes increasingly useful in the Steel and Aluminum stages. Check two things before adding another base:

  1. Can the current equipment harvest the resource efficiently?
  2. Will upcoming crafting require enough of it to make several return trips?

If either answer is no, another permanent structure is unlikely to save much time.

After the Ornithopter, Prioritize the Building Itself

Flight changes base placement because cliffs, open sand and long ground detours stop dominating every route.

After the Scout Ornithopter becomes normal transport, a strong main base needs:

  • enough flat ground for current and future machines;
  • storage that can absorb later material tiers;
  • clear ground-vehicle access;
  • a safe landing and parking area;
  • reliable water and fuel support;
  • expansion room that does not require demolishing half the structure.

At this stage, keeping the production center stable is usually more useful than moving it closer to every new deposit. Fly to specialized farming locations and bring the materials back.

Single Player and Multiplayer Need Different Deep Desert Plans

The Deep Desert works differently in Single Player.

In Solo, the map does not reset and your buildings there are not wiped by the normal multiplayer cycle. That makes persistent storage and production much more valuable than a temporary layout built around an approaching reset.

Multiplayer follows different world rules, so do not copy a Solo Deep Desert building plan directly into a shared server.

The Base Reconstruction Tool cannot be used to back up or restore bases in the Deep Desert; its reconstruction functions are limited to Hagga Basin. A Deep Desert base therefore needs to be planned around the site where it is actually built.

For the Solo persistence rules and other mode differences, use the Single Player Guide.

On Multiplayer, Keep More Than One Candidate Location

An exact coordinate is less reliable on a shared world because another player’s Sub-fief may already occupy the ideal ground.

Use the surrounding region as the target.

Around Imperial Testing Station No. 2, for example, search outward until you find a flat location with vehicle access and enough expansion room. A slightly longer trip is preferable to squeezing the entire production base onto a narrow ledge because the first choice is occupied.

The same approach works farther north: keep the resource and activity cluster within practical reach, but let the terrain decide the final building plot.

When Is Another Base Actually Worth It?

Add another site when the existing one repeatedly creates the same problem.

That usually means one of three things:

  • most current objectives and farming runs now begin in another region;
  • a production tier requires repeated long-distance hauling;
  • the existing site has run out of practical room for machines, storage or vehicles.

A single inconvenient journey is not enough, and neither is discovering one valuable deposit that can be emptied in a single trip.

With Base Reconstruction currently carrying additional risk, the safest Hagga Basin progression is:

small southern resource base → Vermillius Gap production base → optional northern Aluminum outpost → spacious long-term production site after flight

Each new structure should remove work you are already repeating rather than create another base that needs to be supplied.
