Castlevania Belmont's Curse Cemetery Walkthrough: Find Medusa

Quick Answer

Enter Holy Innocents’ Cemetery from Street of the Tomb Masons. Find the spirit in Sepulcher of the Knight, follow its clue toward Roman Baths, then continue through Serpents’ Lair and Ancient Sewers to reach Medusa (The Prophetess).

Before fighting her, read Guardian’s Gaze in Roman Baths. Turn Rose away when Medusa uses her petrifying gaze, then attack after the danger passes. Defeating Medusa gives Rose the final guardian key.

The Cemetery is easy to explore in the wrong direction. Its passages connect burial chambers, ruined baths, underground sewers, and a lower entrance back to Paris. Several of those routes contain useful equipment or shortcuts, but they do not all lead toward The Prophetess.

The first reliable destination is Roman Baths, identified by a spirit in Sepulcher of the Knight. From there, the route continues deeper underground until Rose reaches Medusa. On the way, the Lance and several permanent upgrades can make the encounter more manageable.

Two locations deserve attention when returning to the Cemetery: Fountain of the Lost, which contains a teleporting shortcut and a four-chain chest, and Hollow Tree in Pauper’s Grave, where a spirit points toward a passage beneath the roots.

How to Reach Medusa Through the Cemetery

Cemetery Entrance and Sepulcher of the Knight

From Street of the Tomb Masons, enter the Cemetery through the approach containing a challenge encounter. A save point becomes available shortly afterward.

Make your way to Sepulcher of the Knight and find the spirit connected to The Prophetess.

Spirit clue in Sepulcher of the Knight describing an expedition to Roman Baths
The spirit identifies Roman Baths as the destination of a failed expedition searching for a creature.

The spirit describes the Captain of the Guard leading an expedition into Roman Baths. That expedition ended badly, but the account gives Rose a named location to investigate.

Continue through the Cemetery’s burial passages toward the ruins rather than repeatedly searching the entrance for another guardian.

There are two useful rewards along this early stretch:

  • Abyssal Eye, Cemetery Entrance: a chest contains this Relic, which increases Rose’s damage against controlled enemies by 35%.
  • Wise Heart Fragment, Cloister: a permanent upgrade worth collecting during the approach.

Abyssal Eye provides conditional damage rather than a constant increase against every enemy. It is most relevant when Rose can attack a target while that enemy is under a control effect.

XP statues are also scattered through Sepulcher of the Knight and Memorial for the Dead.

The main route continues toward Fountain of the Innocents, Ossuary of the Innocents, and ultimately Roman Baths.

How to Get the Lance at Fountain of the Innocents

Fountain of the Innocents contains a challenge room rewarding the Lance, a weapon with a different attack style from Rose’s shorter-reaching swords.

Complete the challenge to obtain it.

The Lance has ATK 25 and allows Rose to aim before throwing it. With the controls shown on the weapon card, hold X to aim and release X to throw. It also has an additional action called Push.

Its ranged attack is useful when closing the distance would put Rose in danger. Against an enemy that is difficult to approach safely, you can attack from farther away without committing immediately to close-range strikes.

The Lance is worth considering before Medusa, since it gives Rose another way to create distance during the fight. It does not remove the need to respond to her petrifying gaze.

Fountain of the Innocents vs. Fountain of the Lost

These are different locations.

Fountain of the Innocents contains the Lance challenge. Fountain of the Lost contains a teleporting shortcut and a chest secured by four chains.

If you want the Lance, complete the Fountain of the Innocents challenge. The chained chest elsewhere in the Cemetery is a separate reward.

Ossuary of the Innocents: Save and Collect the Brave Heart Fragment

Continue into Ossuary of the Innocents.

A Brave Heart Fragment is available here, along with a save point before Rose proceeds toward the deeper Cemetery. The fragment is worth taking before Medusa because it improves Rose without requiring a different weapon or Relic setup.

Use the save point before moving into Roman Baths, especially if the earlier challenge encounters have reduced your healing supplies.

Ossuary of the Innocents also contains an ATK Up challenge room encountered during later exploration. Its completion contributes to the chained chest at Fountain of the Lost.

A spirit called Cemetery Fountain can also be found here. Its clue points toward using the Fountain of the Lost as a shortcut, which becomes particularly useful when returning through the Cemetery.

For the first trip to Medusa, continue toward Roman Baths after collecting the upgrades you want.

Roman Baths: Where to Find Guardian’s Gaze

Roman Baths contains the most important clue for surviving Medusa.

Look for the spirit called Guardian’s Gaze.

Guardian's Gaze spirit clue warning about paralysis caused by looking into the monster's eyes
Guardian's Gaze describes being unable to move after seeing the monster's eyes and points toward turning away.

The spirit recalls looking into the monster’s eyes and becoming unable to move. Its final warning is that turning away might have prevented what happened.

That warning matters when Rose finally reaches Medusa. Her gaze can interrupt movement and leave Rose vulnerable, so continuing to face her throughout the fight is dangerous.

Roman Baths also contains a Wise Heart Fragment, XP statues, and a challenge room connected to the four-chain chest.

Nearby Mass Grave holds another useful Relic.

Raven’s Feather Location and Effect

Raven’s Feather is found in Mass Grave.

It increases Rose’s damage by 25% when fighting in the air.

This makes the Relic useful for players who frequently jump before attacking. The effect depends on Rose fighting while airborne rather than remaining on the ground.

You can collect Raven’s Feather during the Roman Baths portion of the journey, then continue deeper toward Serpents’ Lair.

Serpents’ Lair and Ancient Sewers: Where to Go Next

After Roman Baths, continue through Serpents’ Lair toward Ancient Sewers.

Serpents’ Lair contains an XP statue and a save point. Use the save point before going farther if your health or healing supplies need attention.

In Ancient Sewers, look for an additional XP statue and a DEF Up pickup. The permanent defense increase is particularly useful before Medusa.

Ancient Sewers also connects to an alternate lower entrance from the Paris streets. Reaching that connection can be confusing because it looks like a route away from the Cemetery.

Finding the Paris connection does not complete the investigation. If Medusa has not been defeated, continue through the deeper Cemetery passages rather than treating the lower exit as the end of the route.

The guardian encounter lies beyond this stretch of the underground investigation.

How to Beat Medusa and Avoid Petrification

Medusa (The Prophetess) holds the final guardian key required to open the Catacombs.

Before entering the fight, consider the equipment and upgrades available along the route:

  • Brave Heart Fragment: collected in Ossuary of the Innocents.
  • DEF Up: found in Ancient Sewers.
  • Lance, ATK 25: obtained from the Fountain of the Innocents challenge room, useful for attacking from a distance.

The warning from Guardian’s Gaze is the main clue to Medusa’s distinctive attack.

What to Do When Medusa Uses Her Gaze

Medusa’s petrifying gaze punishes Rose for continuing to face her during the dangerous moment.

Use this sequence:

  1. Watch for the gaze attack. Avoid beginning a long attack sequence when Medusa is preparing to direct her gaze at Rose.
  2. Turn Rose away from Medusa. The Guardian’s Gaze clue points specifically to avoiding eye contact.
  3. Wait for the danger to pass. Resume attacking once Rose can face Medusa without immediately risking petrification.

If you keep becoming petrified, the first thing to change is how Rose responds to the gaze. Merely switching to a higher-damage weapon will not address that attack.

The Lance provides an option for keeping more distance between Rose and Medusa. A familiar melee weapon can also work, provided you leave enough time to turn away when the gaze begins.

Avoid committing to extended attacks just as Medusa starts another action. Being caught while unable to move creates an opening for her rather than for Rose.

What Happens After Defeating Medusa?

When Medusa is defeated, she is absorbed into The Prophetess Tarot card, and Rose receives the final guardian key.

Medusa's defeat gives Rose the last guardian key required for the Catacombs Gate.

Medusa also reveals that Dracula’s resurrection is being prepared beneath Paris. Rose now has the keys needed to investigate the ritual.

Before leaving the surrounding passages, there is another weapon worth collecting.

Rusted Harpe and Aegis Location and Shield Controls

After the Medusa encounter, continue along the exit route and look for a glowing pickup near the foot of an ascending rubble-covered passage.

Look for the interaction prompt at the base of the ascending passage after Medusa.

Interact with the pickup to obtain Rusted Harpe and Aegis.

Rusted Harpe and Aegis has ATK 25. Hold X to block attacks from the front. Its additional action is Shield Bash.

Rusted Harpe and Aegis combines a sword with a shield and has ATK 25.

Hold X to block incoming attacks from the front, or use the equivalent control for your input layout. The weapon also includes Shield Bash.

This makes it different from the Lance or other weapons focused primarily on attacking. The shield offers a defensive option against enemies approaching from directly ahead, while the sword remains available for offense.

Because the weapon is obtained after Medusa, it is more relevant to the journey beyond the Cemetery than to Rose’s first fight against her.

Fountain of the Lost: How to Use the Shortcut and Open the Chained Chest

Fountain of the Lost has two separate functions: a teleporting shortcut and a treasure chest secured by four chains.

How to Use the Fountain of the Lost Shortcut

The Cemetery Fountain spirit in Ossuary of the Innocents points toward jumping into the Fountain of the Lost.

When you reach the fountain, jump into its water to activate the shortcut.

Jump into the Fountain of the Lost to use the shortcut toward the deeper Cemetery.

The fountain transports Rose toward the area near Medusa’s encounter.

It is particularly useful when revisiting the Cemetery, since it lets Rose avoid repeating much of the route through the underground passages.

The nearby chained chest does not need to be opened before using the fountain.

How to Remove the Four Chains at Fountain of the Lost

The same area contains a treasure chest secured by four chains.

The Fountain of the Lost chest has four chains tied to Cemetery challenge-room completion.

Opening the chest requires completing four corresponding challenge rooms.

Two challenge rooms are identifiable along the Cemetery route:

  • Roman Baths: a challenge room encountered during the search for Medusa.
  • Ossuary of the Innocents: a challenge room rewarding ATK Up, encountered during later exploration.

Clearing those two rooms alone will not release all four chains. If the chest remains sealed, check which Cemetery challenges you have already completed and look for unfinished encounters.

The fountain’s teleporting shortcut continues to function independently of this chest.

Where to Find the Hollow Tree in Pauper’s Grave

In Pauper’s Grave, a spirit clue called Roots of the Hollow Tree points toward a hidden passage beneath a hollow tree.

The location can be identified on the Cemetery map.

Find the Hollow Tree marker in Pauper's Grave, near the left-hand passage shown on the map.

Open the Pauper’s Grave map and locate the marked Hollow Tree position near the short passage on the left side of the area.

The Roots of the Hollow Tree spirit clue points toward a passage beneath the tree. Use the map marker to return to this location while exploring Pauper’s Grave.

Pauper’s Grave also contains an XP statue. The Fountain of the Lost teleport is a separate connection elsewhere in the Cemetery.

Where to Go After the Cemetery

After defeating Medusa, Rose has the final guardian key. Her next destination is the sealed Catacombs entrance beneath Paris.

Return to the Paris sewers. If you cannot remember where the entrance is or why the gate remains locked, follow How to Open the Catacombs Gate for the return route and key requirements.

Once inside, the next objective is Stop the Resurrection.
