Castlevania Belmont's Curse Catacombs Walkthrough: Stop the Resurrection
Follow the Death Mark through the Catacombs, find the Pair of Longswords and Whip, collect useful Relics, and discover what happens when Rose confronts Death.
Updated:
Quick Answer
Enter the Catacombs and travel through Catacomb Entrance and Path of the Abyss to reach Charnel Galleries. The Death Mark clue directs Rose toward the Altar of Bones. Follow the markings on the walls as you continue through the underground chambers.
The route leads through Crossroads of the Dead, Chamber of Whispers, Jaws of Limbo, Throat of Hell, and Blood Pits before reaching Hall of the Fallen Angels. Rose’s first confrontation with Death ends through a scripted story sequence rather than a conventional boss victory.
The objective Stop the Resurrection begins after Rose opens the Catacombs Gate and descends beneath Paris. The guardians have been defeated, but the souls they collected are still being used for Dracula’s resurrection.
The Catacombs contain several connected chambers, making it easy to lose track of the route toward the ritual. A spirit in Charnel Galleries provides the most useful clue: victims were dragged toward the Altar of Bones, and marks were left on the walls along the way.
There are also weapons worth examining during the journey. The Pair of Longswords rewards precise combo timing, while the Whip deals additional damage at the farthest point of its reach. Four Relics provide different bonuses depending on enemy kills, guard breaks, or Rose’s remaining health.
How to Enter the Catacombs and Reach Death Mark
The entrance is beyond the sealed gate in the Paris sewer network.
After opening the gate, Rose enters Catacomb Entrance and proceeds into Path of the Abyss. If the gate itself remains closed, check the guardian-key requirement in How to Open the Catacombs Gate.
Catacomb Entrance: Specter’s Whisper
The opening section contains a Brave Heart Fragment, an XP statue, and a chest holding Specter’s Whisper. A save point is available before Rose moves farther underground.
Specter’s Whisper increases Rose’s damage by 30% whenever her health is below 20%.
This is a high-risk offensive Relic. Its effect becomes active only when Rose is close to defeat, so deliberately taking damage to activate it can be dangerous during a long journey without an immediate recovery opportunity.
If you prefer keeping Rose at a safer health level, the permanent Brave Heart Fragment is the more dependable pickup during the initial exploration.
Path of the Abyss: Mourning Bead
Continue into Path of the Abyss, where another chest contains Mourning Bead. An XP statue can also be collected in this section.
Mourning Bead increases Rose’s movement speed by 35% for 7 seconds after killing an enemy.
The effect is particularly useful in rooms containing several ordinary enemies. Defeating one target gives Rose a brief burst of movement speed, making it easier to close the distance to another enemy or reposition before the next attack.
Against a lone opponent, there may be no additional enemy available to trigger the bonus. Mourning Bead is therefore better suited to moving through enemy-filled passages than relying on it for an isolated confrontation.
From Path of the Abyss, continue toward Charnel Galleries.
Death Mark: How to Follow the Wall Markings
In Charnel Galleries, Rose encounters a spirit clue named Death Mark, connected to The Shadow.
The spirit recalls a monster dragging souls toward the Altar of Bones. The victims left marks on the walls to trace the route through the Catacombs.
Where Should You Look After Finding Death Mark?
Look at the walls of the underground passages, not for a new objective marker on the map.
The clue describes physical markings left along the route. Use the symbol shown in the spirit’s memory to recognize what you are looking for as Rose moves through the chambers.
- Examine the symbol revealed by the Death Mark spirit.
- Watch the walls as you explore the passages beyond Charnel Galleries.
- Continue toward the Altar of Bones, the destination named in the clue.
- Use the map to check which chamber you have reached when the passages branch.
If you repeatedly return to Charnel Galleries while searching for a marked destination on the map, change your approach. The clue points to markings in the environment, while the map remains useful for checking your location.
Charnel Galleries also contains an XP statue. The route continues toward Crossroads of the Dead, where Rose can obtain another weapon.
Where to Find the Pair of Longswords in Crossroads of the Dead
A chest in Crossroads of the Dead contains the Pair of Longswords.
This weapon has ATK 25 and a timed combo mechanic that differs from ordinary repeated attacks.
How to Extend the Pair of Longswords Combo
The weapon allows Rose to prolong an attack combination by pressing the attack button as the previous strike connects with the enemy.
With the displayed controls, that input is X. The weapon also has a special action called Blade Flurry.
The timing matters more than pressing the button rapidly. Watch for the previous hit to connect, then input the next attack to continue the combination.
Against enemies that remain within reach, the Pair of Longswords can maintain pressure through successive attacks. The trade-off is the time Rose spends committing to the combo. If an enemy is about to retaliate, stop extending the attack and move out of danger.
The weapon is a useful option for players who enjoy timing consecutive hits, but its ATK value alone does not make it an automatic replacement for every earlier weapon.
Continue Through Gallery of Teeth
After Crossroads of the Dead, continue through Gallery of Teeth toward Chamber of Whispers.
Gallery of Teeth contains an XP statue. Collect it along the route, then proceed into the next chamber.
Chamber of Whispers: Wise Heart Fragment
Chamber of Whispers contains a Wise Heart Fragment and an XP statue.
The fragment provides a permanent improvement to Rose, making it a worthwhile pickup before the lower Catacombs. It is particularly useful if earlier encounters have been draining your resources faster than expected.
Continue from Chamber of Whispers toward Jaws of Limbo. The next stretch contains two Relics with very different combat effects.
Jaws of Limbo and Throat of Hell: Necro Charm and Ebony Claw
The route through Jaws of Limbo and Throat of Hell offers two useful choices: a damage bonus triggered by killing enemies and a longer stun triggered by breaking their guard.
Necro Charm: 25% More Damage After a Kill
A chest in Jaws of Limbo contains Necro Charm. An XP statue is also available in this area.
Necro Charm increases Rose’s damage by 25% for 3 seconds after killing an enemy.
The effect is useful when several opponents are close enough for Rose to move from one target to the next. Killing the first enemy activates a short damage window, allowing her to attack the remaining enemies with the bonus.
It is less dependable against a single powerful enemy, since the trigger requires a kill. If no additional target is available, Rose cannot activate the bonus simply by continuing to attack that opponent.
Ebony Claw: Longer Stun After Breaking Guard
In Throat of Hell, another chest contains Ebony Claw. This section also holds a Wise Heart Fragment.
Ebony Claw increases the stun duration caused by breaking an enemy’s guard by 50%.
The effect gives Rose a longer opening after a successful guard break. That additional time can be used to attack the vulnerable enemy or move into a safer position before it recovers.
Unlike Necro Charm, Ebony Claw does not need an enemy kill to activate. It depends on breaking a guard, making it more useful against enemies that defend themselves and can be forced into a guard-break stun.
It does not provide the same benefit against opponents whose guard cannot be broken.
The Wise Heart Fragment in Throat of Hell is also worth collecting before moving farther toward the ritual.
Save Before Entering Blood Pits
After Throat of Hell, Rose encounters another save point before the route continues into Blood Pits.
Recover here and check your equipment before proceeding. The lower Catacombs contain the final stretch of the journey toward Death.
If you have just acquired the Pair of Longswords, Necro Charm, or Ebony Claw, this is a convenient point to decide which equipment suits the enemies you have been fighting.
Continue into Blood Pits when ready.
Blood Pits and Hall of the Fallen Angels: Whip Location
Blood Pits contains two XP statues along the route toward Hall of the Fallen Angels.
Before the confrontation with Death, look for a chest in Hall of the Fallen Angels containing the Whip.
The Whip has ATK 25 and a distinctive range-based damage mechanic: the farthest point of its attack deals more damage.
Its additional action is Whip Drag.
How to Deal More Damage with the Whip
Unlike the Pair of Longswords, which rewards precisely timed consecutive hits, the Whip rewards positioning.
To benefit from its stronger striking point, keep enough distance for the end of the Whip to reach the enemy. Standing directly beside a target may prevent Rose from taking full advantage of the weapon’s increased damage at maximum reach.
Against enemies that move toward Rose quickly, reposition between attacks to restore the distance needed for a stronger hit.
The Whip weapon is also different from the Arcane Whip acquired earlier. The Arcane Whip is used for traversal, while this chest provides a weapon Rose can equip for combat.
After collecting the Whip, continue toward Death’s ritual chamber.
Death Encounter: Can You Stop the Resurrection?
At the end of the Catacombs journey, Rose confronts Death during Stop the Resurrection.
Death recognizes Rose as a Belmont and reveals the purpose of the collected souls. The suffering throughout Paris has fueled the ritual, and Belmont blood can help complete Dracula’s return.
Why Does Rose Lose to Death?
The first confrontation ends in a scripted defeat. When Death overwhelms Rose and the next scene begins, continue through the resurrection sequence.
Returning for another weapon or Relic will not turn this encounter into a conventional boss victory.
What Happens After Death’s Ritual?
Death uses Belmont blood to complete the ritual, allowing Dracula to return.
Trevor Belmont intervenes during the events that follow and urges Rose to resist the darkness connected to her curse. Although he helps her, Dracula’s resurrection has already succeeded.
Where to Go After Stop the Resurrection
Rose must now leave the Catacombs and continue toward Dracula’s Castle.
Proceed toward Collapsed Path of Orpheus. The route ahead leads to the Ferryman, who carries Rose onward from the underground passages.
