Step 1: Get Embrujo First
Before solving the mist, lift, or half-face doors, you need Embrujo. It is the weapon that lets you use many of Castle of the Mist’s route mechanics:

Step 2: Find the Purple Mist / Gas Blocker
The purple mist / gas is one of the first major progression walls after Embrujo. You will usually notice it when a route looks like it should continue, but the purple cloud blocks the path.
When you reach this blocker, do not keep testing jumps or dashes through it. Backtrack into the connected Castle rooms and look for an Embrujo route that goes around the mist rather than through it.
Your goal is to find the bypass route around the gas, not pass through the cloud itself. If you are still entering the purple mist directly, backtrack to the nearby Embrujo / bell rooms and look for the alternate side route that leads away from the blocked path.
Step 3: Reach the Gas-Control NPC Room
The route that turns off the mist leads to a small NPC / control room connected to the gas system. This is the room you are looking for when the article says “gas-control route.”
Inside this route, the important detail is not combat. It is progression. Once you reach the gas-control NPC room and complete the interaction, the same purple mist room that blocked you earlier becomes passable.

Step 4: Return to the Mist Room and Confirm It Is Clear
After completing the gas-control route, go back to the purple mist / gas blocker. The room should now be safe to cross or at least no longer blocked by the same cloud.
This is the first big backtrack point. Before moving too far ahead, remember which rooms were blocked by gas, because several side paths become worth revisiting later.
Step 5: Return to the Central Lift
Once the purple mist / gas route is solved, return to the central lift shaft in Castle of the Mist. Before clearing the gas route, this lift looks blocked, dead, or unusable.
After the gas-control route is complete, the lift route becomes active. Return to the elevator platform / shaft and use it to descend into the lower Castle route.
The lift does not become useful because of Embrujo alone. It becomes useful after the gas route is solved. If the lift still does nothing, you probably missed the gas-control NPC interaction.
Step 6: Follow the Lower Route to Broken Ring of Sealed Eyes
After the gas-control route is complete, return to the central lift shaft and ride the lift down. This is the important direction change: once you are below the lift, stay on the new lower progression route instead of going back to old mist rooms or earlier Castle side paths. Your target is Broken Ring of Sealed Eyes. It is not found by opening a half-face door first. You get it before those doors become passable, along the lower route that becomes available after the lift starts working. 
Step 7: Open Half-Face and Lady-Face Doors
After getting Broken Ring of Sealed Eyes, return to doors with half-face or lady-face crest wording. These are different from purple mist blockers and lift blockers.
