How Do You Unlock Tech and Gear Tiers in Once Human?

Quick Answer

Open the Archipelago Tech Tree and inspect the requirement shown by your locked upgrade. Complete the required Calamity Tower if its Gear Tier is locked; otherwise, check whether the technology needs Tech Points, research, or missing crafting materials.

A Level 50 character can enter Isles of Abyss with familiar weapon blueprints and still find much of their equipment locked. That becomes particularly frustrating after defeating Long Lament: the game announces that Tier III Gear Crafting is unlocked, yet the crafting screen may still refuse to produce the weapon you want.

Those are separate restrictions. Completing the required Calamity Tower opens the equipment tier, while the Tech Tree, individual blueprints, crafting facilities, and physical materials determine what you can actually make.

The distinction also affects how you spend Tech Points. Some technology can be learned through research or by exploring the islands. Spending points on an unlock that you could obtain through another route may leave you short when the next main quest requires a ship upgrade or a new cannon.

Why Are Your Weapons Locked When You Start at Level 50?

Isles of Abyss starts your character at Level 50, but equipment crafting still follows its own progression requirements. Your character level does not bypass the Tech Level, Gear Tier, or materials required for a particular item.

Your character level, Tech Level, and available Gear Tier serve different purposes.

Character Level is already established when you enter. It does not override the scenario’s equipment restrictions.

Tech Level affects access to technology, blueprint-related upgrades, and other unlocks. A player can possess a blueprint while still lacking the required Tech Level to use or improve it.

Gear Tier determines the equipment crafting level available through the story. Progressing through the designated Calamity Towers is necessary to open higher tiers.

These restrictions can overlap. Having a weapon blueprint and enough materials does not help when its crafting tier remains locked. Likewise, unlocking a new tier does not supply every component required to build an item from that tier.

The fastest way to identify the actual blocker is to inspect the unavailable item instead of immediately farming more materials.

Which Calamity Towers Unlock Tier II and Tier III Gear?

The first two Gear Tier checkpoints have specific Calamity Tower requirements.

Tier II — Sunken Oath

Follow the early main quest until it directs you to the first Calamity Tower, Sunken Oath. Defeat the encounter and collect its reward to unlock Tier II Gear Crafting.

Tier III — Long Lament

After advancing through the Reefshadow Bay objectives, the main quest leads to Long Lament.

Before clearing it, the equipment interface can display the requirement:

“Defeat Calamity Tower Long Lament to unlock.”

Tier III remains locked until Long Lament is defeated. Additional Tech Points cannot replace this story requirement.

Once the challenge is complete and its reward has been claimed, the game displays:

“Gear Crafting Unlocked at Crafting Tier III.”

That message confirms the tier itself is available. It does not confirm that every blueprint, material, or crafting station requirement has also been satisfied.

For the tentacle fight, exposed weak points, and reward collection, use the Calamity Tower guide. Its reward-claiming steps matter because killing the creature and collecting the encounter reward are separate actions.

Later equipment tiers continue to depend on progression requirements. Check the exact locked-tier instruction shown in your current game before assuming the next area or ordinary character experience will unlock it.

How to Unlock Technology Through Exploration

Tech Points can unlock technology directly through the Archipelago Tech Tree, but spending them is not always necessary. Some technologies can also be obtained by recovering finished equipment and completing the appropriate research or reverse-engineering process.

Before purchasing an unfamiliar technology, check whether its unlock description names a location where a finished product can be found.

Exploration provides an important way to build up your technology options. You can encounter equipment, generators, facilities, and other technological objects at points of interest and wreck sites. Some can be recovered with a Recycling Tool and brought back for research or reverse engineering.

A useful early routine is to carry a working Recycling Tool whenever you leave your territory for an unfamiliar location.

When you find a recoverable facility:

  1. Inspect the object and confirm that it can be collected.
  2. Use the appropriate Recycling Tool to recover it.
  3. Bring the recovered item back to the required research facility.
  4. Check its available research or reverse-engineering interaction.
  5. Complete the process and review the resulting technology or points before spending more in the Tech Tree.

Recovered equipment such as generators and ship components can be particularly valuable because it may provide access to technologies you would otherwise need to unlock separately.

An exploration trip through Reefshadow Bay, for example, can produce recoverable equipment including a Biomass Generator, Small Solar Generator, and ship-related components. Those items are worth inspecting rather than treating the area only as a place to gather ore and open crates.

Do Not Confuse Recovering an Item With Researching It

Picking up a facility and learning its technology are different actions.

A recovered item may need further processing at your research setup. It is not always enough to place the recovered object in storage and assume its technology has become available.

Check the research interface after returning home. If the desired technology is still locked, inspect whether the recovered equipment can be researched or reverse-engineered before spending Tech Points to obtain the same unlock.

Research can also take time. Queue available projects when you have the necessary materials instead of expecting every new facility to become immediately craftable.

Before starting research, inspect the required materials and any available processing conditions. A technology may be researchable even when you cannot yet produce its ingredients. Complete the project that removes your current equipment or exploration blocker before committing resources to several unrelated unlocks.

Should You Research the Advanced Recycling Tool or Spend Tech Points?

The Advanced Recycling Tool is particularly valuable early because Isles of Abyss frequently rewards exploration of recoverable machinery and facilities.

You can obtain its technology directly through the Tech system, but there is another route worth checking before spending your points.

At the Tech Research Workbench, the Advanced Recycling Tool can be researched using Steel Ingots and Metal Scraps.

After unlocking the Advanced Recycling Tool recipe, craft the tool at an Advanced Supplies Workbench. The tool has 200 durability.

The research route has a trade-off: the desired result is not guaranteed from a single attempt. You need the relevant materials, and unsuccessful or unrelated research results can consume time and resources.

The right choice depends on what you have available.

When Steel Ingots and Metal Scraps are plentiful, research is attractive because it can preserve Tech Points for mandatory upgrades. When those materials are scarce and the tool is preventing you from recovering valuable objects, purchasing the technology directly may be more practical.

This is especially important at the beginning, when you are also preparing your first ship and working toward story requirements.

Once the technology has been unlocked, craft the Advanced Recycling Tool through its available crafting method. Researching a tool and having a usable copy in your inventory are separate steps.

When Is the Advanced Tool Worth Getting?

Get it before spending a long session exploring islands with recoverable higher-level equipment.

Returning to the same location because your tool was inadequate wastes travel time and may leave you short of the technology needed for subsequent upgrades.

On the other hand, crafting multiple tools immediately is unnecessary when you have not yet found enough recoverable equipment to justify using them.

Keep one suitable tool available, monitor its durability, and replace it before a lengthy exploration trip rather than after arriving at an important salvage location.

Which Tech Unlocks Should You Prioritize Early?

The early story places several different demands on your Tech Points. A sensible spending order follows the next unavoidable objective rather than unlocking every attractive facility in the same branch. Before spending Tech Points, check whether the current objective explicitly requires that unlock, whether a finished product can be recovered through exploration, and whether you can already produce the materials needed to use it. An upgrade that cannot be crafted yet may be less useful than technology that immediately removes your next progression blocker.

How to Unlock the Large Sail Without Wasting Tech Points

One early water-territory objective requires Ship Upgrade II and the Large Sail. The Large Sail is particularly worth checking before spending Tech Points because its technology description offers two different unlock methods.

Method 1: Spend 18 Tech Points

Open the Archipelago Tech Tree, select Large Sail, and unlock it directly for 18 Tech Points once its requirements are available.

This is the more straightforward option when the ship upgrade objective is blocking your progress and you already have enough points.

Method 2: Find a Finished Product at Damp Ruin

The Large Sail technology description also directs players to Damp Ruin, where a finished product can be found and used for reverse engineering.

This alternative is worth considering when you are already exploring Damp Ruin or want to preserve Tech Points for another required upgrade. You still need to find the relevant product and complete the reverse-engineering process, so it is not an immediate unlock simply from visiting the location.

Large Sail costs 18 Tech Points, or you can find a finished product at Damp Ruin and reverse-engineer its technology.

The choice depends on which resource is more valuable to you at that moment. Spending points removes the need to search for the finished product, while reverse engineering can preserve those points for other technologies.

After unlocking the necessary technologies, return to your vessel and install the upgraded sail. Learning Large Sail does not automatically replace the Small Sail already fitted to your ship.

After unlocking the Large Sail, return to the vessel and follow the Ship Building steps to install it without obstructing your cannons.

Which Cannon Technology Do You Need Before Long Lament?

During the preparations for Long Lament, a quest objective asks you to unlock Rapid Fire Cannon or Ice Cannon through exploration or by spending Tech Points. Only one of these two technologies is required by that objective.

Check your existing unlocks before spending anything. If neither technology is available, inspect the Archipelago Tech Tree and the exploration alternatives. Finding the required technology can preserve points, while purchasing it directly may be faster when the main quest is waiting.

After unlocking one, check whether the objective has updated. Unlocking a cannon technology and installing the actual weapon are separate actions. Build the cannon on your ship only when the next task requires it or you intend to use it in combat.

The two cannon types may have different research costs and construction materials. Choose the option you can obtain and craft with your current resources rather than purchasing both.

Why Is Your Blueprint Still Locked?

A blueprint in your collection does not mean the item is immediately usable.

Start by checking which requirement the blueprint or equipment interface displays.

A missing Tech Level means further technology progression is necessary. This is separate from the Gear Tier opened through the story.

A missing Gear Tier requires the corresponding progression challenge. Spending more Tech Points cannot replace defeating Long Lament when the item explicitly names that tower.

A missing technology unlock means the relevant recipe or facility has not yet been learned through the Tech Tree, research, or exploration.

A missing crafting material means you have already passed some unlock conditions but still cannot complete the item.

The distinction prevents wasted effort. Players sometimes concentrate on farming points while the actual missing requirement is a Calamity Tower clear, or defeat a tower and then expect a blueprint to become usable without satisfying its Tech Level.

Read the exact instruction displayed by the unavailable item before deciding whether the next trip should be for research materials, a story challenge, or a crafting component.

Why Can’t You Craft Tier III Weapons After Long Lament?

Long Lament is a clear example of a successful story unlock that can leave an individual weapon unavailable.

After the tower reward is collected, the Tier III crafting message appears. Returning to the equipment interface allows the next tier to be selected, but the intended weapon may still require a Weapon Body.

In one progression sequence, the player completed Long Lament, returned to the crafting screen, and found that the Weapon Body needed for the new weapon was missing. The Tier III unlock had worked; the remaining obstacle was a physical crafting component.

When this happens, inspect the item requirements in order:

  1. Confirm that the Gear Tier is unlocked.
  2. Check that the desired weapon blueprint is available and meets its Tech Level requirements.
  3. Inspect the Weapon Body or Armor Lining requirement.
  4. Check whether the necessary material can be processed with your current production technology.
  5. Confirm that the appropriate crafting bench is available.

This is more productive than repeating Long Lament after its Tier III reward has already been collected.

Weapon Bodies and Armor Linings

Unlocking a higher Gear Tier does not automatically provide the components needed to craft its weapons or armor. Before farming materials, select the equipment you want and inspect its exact Weapon Body or Armor Lining requirement.

For Medium-Caliber Weapon Body III, the crafting interface lists two acquisition routes:

  • Defeat Voyagers at sea.
  • Explore underwater loot crates in Haywire Zone 3.

This component is used to craft Level III Submachine Guns, Assault Rifles, and Light Machine Guns. A Tier III weapon requiring Medium-Caliber Weapon Body III cannot be completed with a different body type.

Tier III weapon crafting screen showing Medium-Caliber Weapon Body III missing at 0 of 1 and its acquisition locations
Medium-Caliber Weapon Body III is missing (0/1). Obtain it from Voyagers at sea or underwater loot crates in Haywire Zone 3.

The crafting screen makes the shortage easy to identify. The required Weapon Body displays 0/1, while the other materials may already be sufficient. In that situation, collecting more ordinary crafting resources will not finish the weapon.

Voyagers are a practical target when you are already equipped for naval combat. Damage the enemy ship, board it, and check the available loot. Underwater crates in Haywire Zone 3 provide another route when you are exploring that area.

Armor uses its own lining requirements. Check the selected armor piece’s material details rather than assuming the same Weapon Body locations apply to Armor Linings.

If you are currently completing the Reefshadow Bay Voyager objective, the Isles of Abyss progression walkthrough covers the required encounter and what to collect before returning to Ran.

Missing Processed Materials Are a Different Blocker

A player can have enough Tech Points to unlock ammunition or an equipment upgrade while still lacking the technology required to process its materials.

One example involves Armor-Piercing Arrows. The player had sufficient points for the ammunition technology but could not yet produce the required Tungsten. Unlocking Tungsten processing was the outstanding requirement.

This creates an avoidable resource trap. Learning an advanced ammunition recipe provides little immediate benefit when its material cannot be produced.

Before spending points on a higher-level weapon, ammunition type, or facility, inspect the entire crafting chain. A missing Furnace upgrade, processed metal, or equipment component can prevent you from using what you have just unlocked.

The practical decision is whether the new technology solves your next immediate task or merely creates another unavailable recipe in your crafting list.
