How I Get Black Powder and Stop Crown Attacks
My practical route for getting early Black Powder, loading the first Gun Tower, building permanent production, and defending stronger Crown attacks.
Updated:
Quick Answer
For the first Crown attack, I do not wait for a complete Powder Mill industry. I send the opening ship to Jetsum, bring Black Powder directly home, prepare 50 Stone, and place one Small Gun Tower inside the Pirate Camp’s range and close enough to cover the vulnerable coast. I do not consider the defense ready until Black Powder has arrived and the tower’s Ammunition is above zero.
My first serious defense problem appeared before the Haven was ready for a permanent military industry.
Once I began exploring the Seven Seas, the Crown gained opportunities to attack the island. At that point, most of my workforce was already supporting Housing, Stew, Planks, Booze, the first ship, and its Crew.
Building an entire Black Powder chain immediately would have required:
- another useful Pirate Camp;
- a Guano deposit;
- Hardwood;
- raw Stone;
- a Char Burner;
- a Powder Mill;
- additional workers and Fetchers;
- routes between several elevations.
That was too much to finish before the first attack.
My emergency route was much shorter:
- identify the vulnerable coast;
- send the opening ship to Jetsum;
- prepare the Stone for one Small Gun Tower;
- place the tower inside Pirate Camp range;
- connect a Black Powder provider;
- assign the required Fetcher and worker;
- wait until Ammunition is loaded;
- stop optional construction until the attack is resolved.
Crown Attacks Change How I Use the First Ship
Before exploration begins, I can concentrate on building the Haven.
After the first ship starts moving through the Seven Seas, I need to think about both the expedition and the island it leaves behind.
A ship at sea may be unavailable when the Crown warning appears. A ship carrying important cargo may also be more valuable returning home than taking another optional event.
With one Pirate Camp and one predictable vulnerable coast, I normally prepare a Small Gun Tower first.
I use interception later, when I have a combat ship that can remain close enough to respond without abandoning another essential route.
My Fastest Route to the First Black Powder
The first Black Powder I use does not come from a Powder Mill.
I send the Landlubber to a nearby Jetsum event and choose the reward around the current shortage.
One Jetsum event offered four cargo choices:
- 150 Planks
- 100 Booze
- 95 Black Powder
- 70 Planks + 40 Booze + 45 Black Powder
I take the Black Powder option when
- the first tower has not been supplied;
- the Crown warning is already active;
- construction materials are otherwise stable;
- the island can support the Crew until the ship returns.
I take the mixed cargo when
- I need Black Powder but not the full 95;
- the Pier or tower still needs Planks;
- Booze production is too weak for the current Crew;
- several opening shortages must be solved by one trip.
Once the critical cargo is aboard, I turn home.
I do not add a dangerous wreck or combat event merely because it is close to the return route. In one case, the additional reward required sacrificing Crew. I left it for later because the defense cargo was already more valuable than the optional loot.
I Prepare the Tower While the Ship Is Returning
The first Small Gun Tower in this setup cost 50 Stone.
Its panel also showed:
- 1 Fetcher
- 1 Greenhand
- 1 Stew Upkeep
- 10 Black Powder input
- 0.3 Ammunition output
- 1 damage
The 50 Stone cost is only the first check.
Before confirming construction, I also make sure the island can afford the two assigned pirates. A tower that consumes the final free workers can delay its own supply route or stop another essential production chain.
How I Get the Stone in Time
I use whichever source can deliver 50 Stone before the enemy arrives:
- early event rewards;
- existing island stock;
- a Quarry already operating inside the starting territory.
The Quarry I used produced 6 Stone per minute before depletion.
After the deposit was exhausted, it continued at 50% productivity, reducing its output to 3 Stone per minute.
That remaining output is useful later, but it changes my emergency decision.
If the attack is already approaching, I do not wait for a depleted Quarry to slowly produce the entire tower cost. I combine existing stock, event rewards, or another working Stone source.
I Place the Tower Around the Attack Point
I do not place the first Gun Tower beside the Tavern simply because the location looks central.
The tower must satisfy two different placement requirements:
- it must remain inside the Pirate Camp’s allowed range;
- its defended area must cover the vulnerable coast.
My placement order is:
- select the vulnerable Coastal Area;
- identify which Pirate Camp supports that coast;
- move the tower close enough to cover the attack route;
- keep it inside the Camp boundary;
- check that cliffs and deposits do not block construction;
- confirm that a practical delivery route can reach it;
- leave room for another tower if later attacks become stronger.
A tower at the end of an unnecessarily long path may finish construction but remain unsupplied while the attack timer continues.
I prefer a slightly less attractive location with a shorter Black Powder route.
A Finished Gun Tower Is Not a Loaded Gun Tower
The most dangerous mistake is seeing the building complete and assuming the coast is protected.
The tower has to receive Black Powder and convert it into Ammunition.
The empty tower panel showed:
- 0 Black Powder
- 0 Ammunition
- Ammunition capacity of 1
After building the tower, I check:
- Is Black Powder stored in the correct Pirate Camp?
- Does the tower have a selected provider?
- Is a Fetcher assigned?
- Can the Fetcher reach the provider?
- Is the tower receiving Black Powder?
- Has Ammunition increased above zero?
- Does the tower cover the active Coastal Area?
The island resource total is not enough.
Black Powder may exist in another territory, inside a distant Warehouse, or behind a route with no available Fetcher. Until the tower panel shows the resource arriving, I treat the defense as unfinished.
The First Loaded Tower Is Usually Enough
Once the first Small Gun Tower had Ammunition, I allowed the opening Crown ship to enter its defended area.
The tower fired and destroyed the attacking vessel.
After that victory, I did not build three more towers automatically.
With one Pirate Camp and one vulnerable coast, another tower would have added:
- another construction cost;
- more workforce;
- another Black Powder demand;
- another delivery route.
I add defense in response to an actual weakness, not simply because the first tower worked.
When Jetsum Is No Longer Enough
Jetsum is ideal for the opening emergency, but it is not a dependable permanent supply.
I build my own Black Powder production when:
- the initial cargo is running low;
- more than one tower needs Ammunition;
- expansion has created additional vulnerable coasts;
- Crown attacks are becoming stronger;
- Black Powder is required by other military production;
- I have enough workforce for the full chain;
- a useful Pirate Camp can claim Guano.
The production overview shows two final inputs:
- Guano
- Charcoal
Charcoal itself requires:
- Hardwood
- raw Stone
The complete chain is:
Hardwood + raw Stone → Charcoal
Guano + Charcoal → Black Powder
I Claim Guano With a Useful Pirate Camp
The Guano deposits in this opening were outside the starting Pirate Camp’s territory.
That meant permanent production required another Camp or an existing expansion whose range already covered the deposit.
I do not place a Camp solely because one Guano node enters its radius.
I look for a position that also claims:
- a Shallow Pier;
- Fresh Water;
- Salt;
- another missing deposit;
- fertile ground;
- enough space for Housing and a local Warehouse.
A Camp that gives me Guano and a Pier can support both defense and another ship.
A Camp that claims only one ordinary resource may not justify its Housing, Upkeep, Fetcher, and defense costs.
My Permanent Black Powder Build Order
I construct the chain from the sources toward the Powder Mill.
1. I secure Guano first
I confirm that the Guano deposit is actually inside the new Camp’s territory.
A visible deposit outside every Camp radius cannot be connected simply by drawing a longer path.
I then place the gatherer and verify that it has:
- an assigned worker;
- a usable route;
- local storage or a direct destination.
2. I establish Hardwood production
The Char Burner consumes Hardwood continuously.
I keep its Wood source close rather than transporting every load across several cliffs.
If the Hardwood source is distant, I move it into a local Warehouse before connecting the Char Burner.
3. I connect raw Stone
The Char Burner needs raw Stone from a Quarry.
I do not assume that Stone Blocks from a Stone Cutter will satisfy the same input. I inspect the provider and confirm that the Char Burner is requesting the raw resource.
When the Quarry is on another elevation, I use the cheapest route that actually shortens travel.
I do not buy an expensive transport structure before confirming that the problem is distance rather than missing production or a wrong provider.
4. I place the Char Burner between its sources
I position the Char Burner so both Hardwood and Stone can reach it without two long red routes.
The Charcoal output then needs a short route toward the Powder Mill.
5. I place the Powder Mill near Guano and Charcoal
The Powder Mill is the final processor.
I place it where the Guano source and Charcoal output can both reach it through short, visible connections.
I wait until both inputs arrive before exporting finished Black Powder to the defensive coast.
If the Powder Mill remains empty, this lets me identify the failed side without searching through the entire transport network.
The Workforce Cost Is Larger Than the Powder Mill Panel
The Powder Mill is only one building in the chain.
Permanent Black Powder production may require pirates for:
- gathering Guano;
- gathering Hardwood;
- extracting Stone;
- operating the Char Burner;
- operating the Powder Mill;
- carrying Hardwood and Stone;
- carrying Guano and Charcoal;
- exporting the finished Black Powder;
- supplying each Gun Tower.
I do not begin the chain when only one or two Drifters are free.
A half-staffed Powder Mill district consumes construction materials and territory but may still produce no usable Black Powder.
Before I begin, I prepare:
- a free Drifter reserve;
- Housing in the new territory;
- local Stew or another reliable Upkeep route;
- a Warehouse close to the production chain;
- working connections between all three inputs;
- storage for the finished Black Powder;
- a final route to the defended coast.
I Use a Local Warehouse Before Exporting Powder
I do not force the Powder Mill to deliver directly across the entire island.
My preferred route is:
Powder Mill → local Warehouse → defended Camp Warehouse → Gun Tower
This creates two useful checkpoints.
If the local Warehouse remains empty, the production chain has failed.
If the local Warehouse fills but the tower remains empty, the problem is the cross-Camp route or final delivery.
A local buffer also prevents the Powder Mill from stopping because its internal storage is full while one distant Fetcher completes a long round trip.
When I Use a Tower
I prefer a stationary tower when:
- the Haven has one or two predictable attack points;
- the tower already has Ammunition;
- the incoming ship is within the tower’s strength;
- my combat ships are exploring elsewhere;
- I do not want to risk Crew in another naval event.
A tower is especially valuable early because it protects the Haven without requiring a Captain or full ship Crew.
When I Intercept
I use a ship when:
- the incoming attack is stronger than the current tower;
- expansion has created too many exposed coasts;
- a combat ship is already near the Crown vessel;
- moving the ship is cheaper than creating another defensive district;
- I want a Crown interception Deed and the ship can win safely.
I keep a direct-combat ship near the island once later attacks become frequent.
I do not intercept with a ship that is:
- already damaged;
- missing important Crew;
- built for Speed or exploration rather than combat;
- too far away to arrive in time;
- carrying a reward that must return home immediately.
The purpose is to protect the Haven, not to exchange one coastal threat for a lost ship.
When One Small Gun Tower Is No Longer Enough
Later Crown attacks can exceed the damage available from the first tower.
The Coastal Area warning can directly report that the enemy’s Health is greater than the tower’s damage.
When the stronger tower is not yet available, I temporarily reinforce the same coast with additional Small Gun Towers.
I only use this solution when:
- the attack is already approaching;
- Small Gun Towers remain affordable;
- Black Powder production can load every tower;
- no suitable interception ship is available;
- the stronger tower depends on a resource I cannot yet produce.
I do not keep adding Small Gun Towers indefinitely.
Once a stronger tower or reliable combat ship becomes available, I stop increasing the workforce and Ammunition demand of the temporary defense.
My Crown Attack Preparation Order
Before opening another Pirate Camp or sending every combat ship away, I check:
- which coast is currently vulnerable;
- whether an existing tower covers it;
- whether that tower has Ammunition;
- whether Black Powder is stored nearby;
- whether enough Fetchers remain available;
- whether the next Crown ship exceeds the tower’s damage;
- whether a combat ship can intercept safely;
- whether permanent Black Powder production is replacing the initial Jetsum supply.
When an attack warning appears, I pause optional construction until the defense is ready.
A new production boost, Camp, or ship can wait.
A Gun Tower showing zero Ammunition when the Crown arrives cannot.
FAQ
Can a depleted Stone deposit still supply my defenses? +
Yes. The Quarry I used continued at 50% productivity after depletion, reducing its output from 6 Stone per minute to 3. That is still useful for later construction, but it is too slow to rely on when an attack is already approaching.
Can the starting Landlubber intercept Crown attacks? +
The Landlubber was not available as a useful interception option in my opening defense. I used a supplied Gun Tower first, then kept a stronger combat ship near the Haven once Crown attacks became more dangerous.
