How Legendary and Mythical Books Work in Bookshop Simulator
I sort special books by what they do, switch powers around the next shop decision, and only gamble 5,000 Bleps when a failed box will not stop progress.
Updated:
Quick Answer
Regular Used Book Boxes are my route to Rare and Legendary Books. Rare Books are valuable sale stock, while Legendary Books only provide a power when placed in an active display. Mythical Books use a separate box unlocked at Player Level 50. That box cost 5,000 Bleps in my version 1.0 save, did not guarantee a Mythical drop, and warned that Mythical Books cannot be sold. Display progression uses shop levels instead: one early slot, three total powers after the two-slot display, and six total powers after the new three-slot display at Shop Level 50. I equip purchasing powers before an order, sales powers before opening, and conditional powers only where their requirements are actually active.
Rare, Legendary, and Mythical Books at a Glance
| Type | Main source | Sale use | Activates a power? | My decision |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rare | Regular Used Book Boxes | Valuable sale stock | No | Price it and place it on a Rare Bookshelf |
| Legendary | Regular Used Book Boxes | Some copies can be sold, but I lose that copy | Yes | Display useful powers or store conditional ones |
| Mythical | Mythical Used Book Box after Player Level 50 | Cannot be sold | Yes | Keep it and compare it with my weakest active power |
| Custom Special Book | Book Workshop | High-value custom sale stock | No | Increase its value by recycling unwanted Rare or Legendary Books |
A Rare Book and a Legendary Book may both look unusual when they come out of a box, but they solve different problems.
A Rare Book gives me a high-value product to sell.
A Legendary Book changes how the shop operates.
A Mythical Book is a permanent power candidate that cannot recover its box cost through resale.
My Used Book Box Sorting Route
I do not open a large Used Book batch in the middle of an unstable business day.
My route is:
- Refill ordinary selling shelves.
- Keep enough cash for the next normal stock order.
- Place the Scanner close to the box-opening area.
- Buy only a small batch of Used Book Boxes.
- Open one box at a time.
- Move ordinary Used Books to their shelf.
- Inspect or scan every unusual result.
- Put Rare Books on a Rare Bookshelf.
- Put a useful Legendary on an active display.
- Store inactive conditional books on a Personal Shelf.
- Clear the floor before buying another batch.
In our two-player shop, four boxes were manageable because we opened two each while one player still watched current sales.
In solo play, I stop sooner.
My stopping rule is:
If I no longer know where the next result belongs, I do not buy another box.
This prevents the sorting area from becoming a pile of ordinary Used Books, valuable Rare Books, unopened boxes, and Legendary powers with no assigned display.
How Regional Legendary Drops Appear to Work
Pre-1.0 community testing reported a mixture of regional and general Legendary Books.
That testing suggested that the region assigned to the Used Book Box mattered more than the city where the box was physically opened.
For example, carrying a regional box into another shop would not necessarily convert it into that new shop’s drop pool.
The reported pattern was:
- A box could produce an uncollected Legendary associated with its region or the general pool.
- A Legendary that had previously been collected and sold might become available again.
- Once the relevant pool was exhausted, repeating the same regional box might stop producing new Legendary Books.
I have not completed a controlled version 1.0 test across every regional box pool, so I use this as a purchasing guide rather than a guaranteed drop formula.
I also do not plan spending around unofficial pity estimates.
When repeated boxes stop producing anything new, I first ask:
- Am I opening the correct regional box?
- Have I already collected the relevant powers?
- Did I sell a copy that may now be available again?
- Would another location’s box pool give me a better chance at something missing?

The Category column is there for scanning rather than claiming that every power fits only one type of build.
For example, Book of Ra touches sales, purchasing, and employee speed. I classify it as General because its value is spread across several systems.
How I Activate and Switch Legendary Powers
Finding a Legendary Book does not activate it automatically.
The first clear example in my new save was Hermes’ Ledger:
- source: regular Used Book Box;
- effect: 10% discount in apps;
- activation: place it on the Legendary pedestal.
My normal switching route is:
- Read the effect.
- Check whether its condition applies to the current location.
- Identify the weakest active power for the next task.
- Remove that book from the active display.
- Place the new book in the open slot.
- Complete the action that benefits from it.
- Switch again when the next business phase begins.
A Personal Shelf stores the physical book but does not activate the power.
Hermes’ Ledger: Buy First, Then Swap
Hermes’ Ledger is not my permanent sales power.
I use it before:
- a large stock refill;
- several pieces of furniture;
- a new-location startup order;
- expensive Cafe equipment;
- specialty shelves or displays.
The discount is applied when I confirm the app purchase.
After paying, I no longer need to leave Hermes’ Ledger active while the delivery arrives.
Book of Anubis: My General Sales Power
Book of Anubis increases the value of all book sales by 15% without showing an additional condition.
Its role is different from Hermes’ Ledger:
- Hermes’ Ledger reduces app purchase costs by 10%.
- Book of Anubis increases the value of books sold by 15%.
I equip Hermes’ Ledger before confirming a large stock or furniture order. Once the purchase is complete, I replace it with Book of Anubis before opening the shop.
Book of Anubis is my safer general-purpose sales option because it does not require me to:
- remove Storage Racks;
- avoid shop expansions;
- stock one specific genre;
- wait for an end-of-day payment;
- change the employee setup.
Closet Shop: Use Before the First Expansion
Closet Shop pays 250 Bleps at the end of the day while that location has no purchased expansions.
I keep it on a Personal Shelf until I enter a fresh location.
My route is:
- Open the new shop in its original footprint.
- Equip Closet Shop.
- Build only the minimum checkout and selling layout.
- Run compact profitable days.
- Use the extra payments for stock or staff.
- Remove Closet Shop immediately before purchasing the first expansion.
Once I expand, the condition is broken.
I do not leave a dead effect occupying an active display slot.
Low Stock: Check the Operating Cost
Low Stock gives a 20% sales-price increase when the current shop has no Storage Racks.
I use it in a compact shop where the selling shelves themselves can hold enough inventory.
I do not use it when removing storage causes:
- unopened boxes across the floor;
- longer restocking routes;
- repeated stockouts;
- employees walking between several rooms;
- lost sales during customer rushes.
The displayed percentage is not the same as the final business gain.
If the shop becomes harder to operate, I return to Book of Anubis or another unconditional power.
Lord of the Shelves: Count the Shelves Before Using the Slot
Lord of the Shelves pays 15 Bleps per placed Bookshelf at the end of the day, up to 500 Bleps.
That means the power reaches its cap at roughly 34 qualifying Bookshelves:
- 10 Bookshelves produce about 150 Bleps;
- 20 produce about 300 Bleps;
- 34 or more reach the 500-Blep limit.
I do not use it in a compact opening shop with only a few shelves. At ten shelves, the 150-Blep payment may be weaker than an active sales power.
It becomes more attractive in a large, fully furnished location where the Bookshelves already exist. I do not buy unnecessary shelves purely to feed the effect, because the furniture cost and extra floor use can outweigh the daily payment.
How the Display Progression Works
One Active Power
The first pedestal gives me one active power.
At this stage, every choice has an opportunity cost.
Equipping Hermes’ Ledger means I am not simultaneously running:
- Book of Anubis;
- an employee-speed power;
- an end-of-day payment;
- a Used Book farming power.
I switch the single slot around the next immediate task.
Three Active Powers
The two-slot display combines with the original pedestal for three total active powers.
In my existing save, this became available around Shop Level 20.
Three slots are enough for a small operating setup:
- one general sales power;
- one staff, progression, or box power;
- one conditional power that fits the current location.
I still check whether all three requirements are working. Three filled slots do not automatically mean three active benefits.
Six Active Powers
Version 1.0 adds a new three-slot Legendary/Mythical display.
In The Cotswolds furniture menu, I saw it locked behind Shop Level 50.
Together with the earlier three slots, it raises the shop to six simultaneous Legendary or Mythical powers.
The six books can be any mixture of Legendary and Mythical powers.
I do not need six Mythical Books to fill the display or complete the six-power achievement.
Three- and Six-Slot Build Templates
These are planning templates rather than mathematically proven best builds.
I tested some individual powers and switching decisions in version 1.0, but I have not completed controlled profit comparisons for every complete combination.
Three-Slot General Sales Template
Status: Partially tested. Book of Anubis and Hermes’ Ledger are confirmed, but the complete three-slot combination has not been compared against every alternative.
I would use:
- Book of Anubis for a general 15% book-sales increase.
- Admission / Charging Admission for income from incoming traffic.
- Shopping Fever for occasional maximum purchases.
Before a large order, I temporarily replace the weakest slot with Hermes’ Ledger.
My route is:
- Close or pause normal purchasing.
- Equip Hermes’ Ledger.
- Confirm the large order.
- Remove Hermes’ Ledger.
- Restore the sales setup.
- Open the shop.
This template works only when the shelves are stocked. Shopping Fever cannot create value from books that are still inside delivery boxes.
Six-Slot Used Book Farming Template
Status: Planning template. The individual effects are community-reported, and the interaction between Doubled Down, The Scavenger, and Brushing Scammed still needs a controlled version 1.0 test.
The planned slots are:
- Legendary Hunter
- Treasure Hunter
- The Scavenger
- The Used
- Doubled Down
- Brushing Scammed or Hermes’ Ledger during purchasing
The idea is to:
- improve Rare and Legendary opportunities;
- receive additional boxes at day end;
- increase the value of Used Books that do not become special drops;
- reduce the cost of a large box order when Hermes’ Ledger is temporarily equipped.
I would not budget around doubled quantities until I have confirmed how Doubled Down interacts with each individual end-of-day power in the current build.
Six-Slot New-Location Template
Status: Partially tested. Closet Shop’s 250-Blep no-expansion condition is confirmed, but the complete six-slot combination has not been run as one controlled build.
I would begin with:
- Closet Shop
- Admission / Charging Admission
- Tips for Running a Local Bookstore
- Experienced
- Employee of the Month or Training Manual
- Book of Anubis
Hermes’ Ledger temporarily replaces one slot during the initial furniture and stock purchase.
I remove Closet Shop before buying the first expansion, then replace it with a permanent sales, staff, or passive-income effect.
When a 5,000-Blep Mythical Box Is Worth It
The Mythical Used Book Box unlocked at Player Level 50 and cost 5,000 Bleps in my version 1.0 save.
The description warned that Mythical Books are:
- very powerful;
- extremely rare;
- unable to be sold.
The box is not guaranteed to contain one.
I buy it only when:
- normal selling shelves are stocked;
- payroll is covered;
- I can still place another ordinary stock order;
- no essential furniture is waiting;
- the next expansion will not be delayed;
- losing the full 5,000 will not change the next business day;
- I have an active display slot or a clear replacement plan.
I do not buy one simply because Player Level 50 made it available.
An unlock tells me the gamble is available. It does not tell me the business can afford it.
What Happened When I Opened a Mythical Box
My first confirmed version 1.0 Mythical Box attempt did not produce a Mythical Book.
Before opening it, I had delayed buying a Rare Bookshelf because the shop did not own any Rare Books.
The result was:
- Box type: dedicated Mythical Used Book Box
- Price: 5,000 Bleps
- Mythical Book received: no
- Result received: Rare Books
- Immediate effect unlocked: none
- Additional furniture needed: Rare Bookshelf
- Immediate second attempt: no
The practical card point came after opening the box.
Because the results were Rare Books rather than a Mythical power, I had to return to the furniture menu and purchase the Rare Bookshelf I had deliberately skipped earlier.
I still prefer that order.
Buying specialty furniture before seeing the result would have tied up more money without improving the Mythical chance.
After the failed attempt, I did not buy another box immediately.
My recovery route was:
- Inspect every result.
- Move the Rare Books to the correct selling shelf.
- Put ordinary Used Books into stock.
- Refill normal book categories.
- Run the shop until the 5,000-Blep reserve had recovered.
- Reconsider the next Mythical attempt only after operating money was safe.
A failed Mythical Box is not worthless if the Rare results can be sold, but it does not provide the permanent power I paid the premium to chase.
What a Successful Mythical Result Still Needs to Prove
A future successful drop becomes useful guide evidence only after I record:
- its exact Mythical name;
- its complete effect;
- the Legendary power it appears to improve;
- the original Legendary value;
- the Mythical value;
- the active power it replaces;
- the best location or setup for it;
- whether that improvement changes an actual business decision.
Until then, I treat the Mythical system as a confirmed high-cost acquisition route with a real failure case, not as a complete Mythical effect list.
Keep, Sell, Store, or Recycle?
Ordinary Used Book
I sell it normally.
It does not need an active display or long-term storage decision.
Rare Book
I place it on a Rare Bookshelf and treat it as high-value merchandise.
The Rare Breadball worth 197.63 Bleps is a good example: valuable sale stock, but not a shop power.
First Useful Legendary
I keep it and test the effect in an active display.
Even a conditional power may become useful in another location.
Conditional Legendary
I store it on a Personal Shelf until the correct setup exists.
Closet Shop is the clearest example:
- weak in an expanded main store;
- useful in a newly purchased location;
- useless again after the first expansion.
Duplicate or Replacement Candidate
I keep it when it can support:
- another location;
- a different three- or six-slot build;
- a condition I am not currently meeting;
- a future Shop Level milestone;
- a different staff or stock strategy.
I do not recycle a useful book just because it is inactive today.
Unwanted Rare or Legendary
At Player Level 25, the Book Workshop can recycle unwanted Rare and Legendary Books.
Recycling raises the value of the next custom Special Book.
Before recycling, I ask:
- Is this my only copy?
- Could another shop use it?
- Does it support an unfinished build?
- Is its direct sale value more useful?
- Am I actually planning to create a Special Book next?
If the answer to the final question is no, I do not recycle merely to clear space.
Mythical Book
I keep it.
The Mythical Box states that Mythical Books cannot be sold.
The Book Workshop description names Rare and Legendary Books as recycling inputs, so I do not assume Mythical Books can be recycled without a confirmed in-game interaction.
Powerup Troubleshooting
The Effect Is Not Active
I check whether the book is in an active Legendary/Mythical display.
A Personal Shelf stores the book but does not run the power.
Book of Anubis Is Not Changing App Prices
Book of Anubis affects book sales, not app purchasing.
I use Hermes’ Ledger for app discounts.
Hermes’ Ledger Is Still Equipped During Business Hours
The discount has already been applied once the order is confirmed.
I replace it with Book of Anubis or another operating power before opening.
Low Stock Is Not Working
I inspect the entire current shop for every Storage Rack.
One remaining Storage Rack breaks the condition.
Closet Shop Stopped Paying
I check whether that location has purchased an expansion.
Once expanded, I replace Closet Shop rather than leaving a broken condition in the display.
I Reached Level 50 but Cannot Buy the Mythical Box
I check Player Level.
I Reached Level 50 but Cannot Buy the New Display
I check that individual location’s Shop Level.
The Mythical Box Only Produced Rare Books
That is a valid result.
The box provides a chance at a Mythical Book rather than a guaranteed Mythical reward.
I Keep Opening Boxes but Never Find the Missing Legendary
I check:
- the region assigned to the box;
- the regional group I am missing;
- whether the desired name is verified;
- whether I have already collected the relevant pool;
- whether I am relying on an unofficial pity estimate.
I change box pools before committing more money to the same repeated result.

FAQ
Can I use Hermes' Ledger and then swap it before the delivery arrives? +
Yes. I only need Hermes' Ledger active when I confirm the app purchase. After paying the discounted total, I can replace it with Book of Anubis before opening the shop; the delivery does not need Hermes' Ledger to remain displayed.
Do I need to buy a Rare Bookshelf before opening a Mythical Used Book Box? +
No. The box can be opened without one. My first 5,000-Blep attempt produced Rare Books instead of a Mythical, so I bought the Rare Bookshelf after seeing the result rather than purchasing specialty furniture in advance.
Can a Personal Shelf activate or preserve a Legendary effect? +
A Personal Shelf preserves the physical book but does not activate its power. I use it for conditional books such as Closet Shop so I can move them into an active display when another location meets the requirement.
Are Legendary Books tied to specific locations? +
Pre-1.0 community testing reported that the Used Book Box's region—not the city where the box is physically opened—determines the relevant regional Legendary pool. I have not fully re-tested that rule in version 1.0, so I use it as a box-selection guide rather than a guaranteed current drop rule.
Do I need six Mythical Books for the six-power achievement? +
No. The achievement counts six active Legendary or Mythical Books in total. A mixed set is enough as long as all six books occupy active display slots in the same shop.
