Part 3: Colorstone Mine & The Green Gem

"A maze of colorful gems blocks the path deep underground."
— Your objective: Solve the push-block puzzles, recover the Green Gem for Hanlon, and uncover the tragedy of Wood Palna.

1

Entering the Mine (Prep Phase)

The Colorstone Mine is the first "real" dungeon of the Demo. Unlike the open forest, this is a confined maze with puzzle elements and higher encounter rates.

⚠️ Survival Checklist

  • Herbs: Ensure each character holds at least 3-4 Medicinal Herbs.
  • MP Check: Do not enter with Maribel at 0 MP. Frizz is needed for the Smogs.
  • Save: There is NO save point inside the mine. Save at Rexwood Church first.
2

The Colorstone Puzzle Guide

The core mechanic here is simple but punishing: "Match 2 to Break." The path is blocked by colored rocks. You must push a rock until it collides with another of the same color.

Tip: Never push a stone into a corner unless you are sure its pair can reach it.

🧠 Puzzle Logic Deep Dive

The "Reset" Safety Net: If you accidentally push a block into a dead end, don't panic. Simply leave the room (stairs/door) and re-enter. The puzzle resets completely.

Priority Order:
1. Clear the main path (usually Red/Blue blocks).
2. Clear side paths for Chests (Yellow blocks).
3. Always clear from the "Exit" side backwards if possible.

3

Matilda's Story & The Wooden Doll

Deep in the mine (17:20), you reach a safe zone where Matilda opens up about the history of "Wood Palna" (now Rexwood). She tells the tragic tale of the hero Palna, who died because the villagers were too afraid to help him.

Receive Key Item: Wooden Doll. This is NOT just flavor text; you need it for the next step.

After the story, Matilda gives you the Wooden Doll (Timestamp 19:55). This item is the emotional anchor of this chapter.

4

The Green Gem & Mine Loot

Your main objective is the Green Gem (Green Colorstone), found at the deepest level. But don't miss the treasures hidden behind the puzzles.

Return to Rexwood: Recruiting Hanlon

Return to the village with the Green Gem. A cutscene triggers where Hanlon is healed. However, his son Patrick is still terrified that history will repeat itself.

CRITICAL FLAG: You must manually select the Wooden Doll from your inventory and give it to Patrick.

The Handoff (32:08): Giving the doll to Patrick gives him courage. Seeing this, Hanlon joins your party to repay the debt. Simultaneously, Matilda leaves the group, hinting at a darker fate awaiting at the East Tower.

Party Update

🔴 Matilda (Left Party) 🟢 Hanlon (Joined Party)

Hanlon is a pure Warrior. He lacks Matilda's "Flame Slash" but has higher HP and Defense. Put him in the front slot to tank hits.

⚠️ "I Can't Recruit Hanlon!" - Rescue Checklist

If you healed Hanlon but he won't join you, you missed a step.

  • Inventory: Do you have the Green Gem AND the Wooden Doll?
  • Interaction: Did you speak to Patrick and select "Use" on the Wooden Doll?
  • Matilda: Did you finish the dialogue where Matilda walks away?

Frequently Asked Questions

I messed up the puzzle blocks. Is my game soft-locked?

No. Dragon Quest puzzles are forgiving. Just walk back up the stairs (or leave the room) and come back in. The stones will reset to their original positions.

Is Hanlon better than Matilda?

They serve different roles. Matilda was a high-damage carry for the early game. Hanlon is a "Tank" designed for the upcoming East Tower boss. He hits hard but is slower. Make sure to heal him manually since he lacks self-sustain magic.
